Re: Recommedations For Boot Stripe Paint
I had very bad luck with Brightside. In the first place it's nasty to work with. Very runny. In the second place it flakes off. Looks like hell before the season ends. Last year I went to the hardware store and got a can of their cheapest water based enamel. It worked much better!
I'm gonna catch it for this one I'll bet.

Re: Recommedations For Boot Stripe Paint
Don't listen to Bruce he really doesn't have a clue
at least about the water based bootop paint. Plain old interlux striping and deck enamel is what your boat came with and works well. If it's blue its int #16. If it's brown, you're out of luck, they no longer make it.
I do agree with Bruce about the Brightsides paint, It's not really very impressive, and is hard to work with.

Re: Recommedations For Boot Stripe Paint
I used super boot stripe red last March it went on very easy and looked great. The boat is in the water all winter and no problems, still looks good.

Re: Recommedations For Boot Stripe Paint
I have used the paints you mentioned over the years and they are ok.I found what works just as well is good old Rustoleum Enamel (oil based). It comes in many colors, has a good gloss,is cheap and wears well unless you abrade it.May not be original equip.but it does the job.Bruce Bett wrote: I had very bad luck with Brightside. Re: Recommedations For Boot Stripe Paint
Sorry to disagree but I had great luck with Brightside. I used 4390 Chocolate Brown. Did you follow the directions and use their primer. I followed the directions carefully and when I was done it was so glossy that you could have shaved using it for a mirror! Why you would be shaving while staring at the waterline I don't know, but you could do it! Strangers stopped on the street to tell me how great it looked, but when we laucnhed it looked like all the rest of the boot tops. It just isn't the same view when the boat is in the water. So if it looks OK on land, it'll be just fine in the water. IMHO.

Re: Boot Stripe Paint - I'm going to try antifouling
Lyle,
I usually get a hairy moustache of weed growing on my boot stripe, especially under the counter. So this year I'm going to paint it with antifouling. It won't give a mirror finish but hopefully it will look a lot better than before.
Has anybody tried this before?
Should I just raise the waterline? Or get a lighter outboard?
Richard.

Re: Recommedations For Boot Stripe Paint
Over the years, I have had poor results with the Interlux Boot products. A few boots ago, I switched to Petit's Easypoxy. Much better product. IMHO.

Lets hear it for Rustoleum. I painted the topsides of a daysailer with the industrial white & it's lasted over 3 years. Don't let Interlux know this or the price of Rustoleum will skyrocket. last year i raised the boot stripe an inch, a bit of a pain in terms of multiple tapings, two coats etc, and i painted the one inch strip just below the boot stripe with white micron CSC - this solved the marine growth problem but the white micron (really shark gray) turned a bit greenish by the end of the season - nevertheless i am happier with it this way than before and i'll repaint the stripe with micron if it ever warms up here -

Re: Recommedations For Boot Stripe Paint
The purists will frown, but I've been using bootstripe tape. If you put it on carefully it sticks through the season, mostly. If Barnacles collect, just remove it when you haul.

Re: Boot Stripe Paint - I'm going to try antifouling
been using interlux red bottom paint for the boot stripe for ten years now. no growth, easy cleanup in the fall, lightly sand and touch up or recoat the following spring. i sand mine down to almost nothing every three years or so and repaint. leave just a shadow for easy taping margins. i connected the boot stripe(red) and the bottom paint(blue) to make life simpler. looks good to me and everyone else.
too much taping and drying time otherwise.

i think it's for good looks but maybe someone knows if it has its origin in something also practical
