I'm starting to think about next spring, and what boat projects I want to tackle. (Sick, I know.) One thing that's been irking me for a few years now is the scabby-looking boot stripe on my Typhoon. 2020 might be the year to deal with that.
What's the most straightforward way to go about repainting it? Currently, it's flaking off in a few spots but solid in most places. I'm assuming I'll need to strip/scrape/sand down the old paint, tape off, and then lay down a new stripe. Topsides are the original gelcoat and are in pretty good condition. The bottom has VC-17 on it, and I'd also like to not touch that.
Any advice or suggestions?

Re: Boot stripe re-paint
Hi Ben,
I would tape off the top of the boot stripe before sanding so you don't scuff up the hull gel coat. You probably don't need to tape off the bottom for sanding. Once you get off all the old boot top paint then retape before painting. Two coats should do it. This is how I did mine last year and it looks great after one year.

Keith...I am curious what kind/brand of paint you used for your boot stripe...a lot of the paint advertised is for "above the waterline" application....thanks.Craig
