Is this a Typhoon

Post by capedory28 »

Hello to All,

I am new to the group and I used to have a CD28 unfortunately it was destroyed in Super Storm Sandy. I have been looking at what the owner calls a CD Typhoon but I have some reservations about it because it is different than the couple that I did sail on. With your help maybe we can confirm what I am looking at.
1. The mast passes through the cabin roof and is stepped on a metal plate that is mounted on a stringer on the cabin floor.
2. The chain plates pass through the deck and are mounted on the side of the hull.
3. It is not a self draining cockpit, it has a grate on the floor that covers the bilge along with a bilge pump similar to an Ensign.
4. There are no quarter berths. It is all open under the cockpit seats.
5. The hatch way into the cabin is all finished off with teak much like a Bristol.
6. Finally, the rear deck behind the tiller has an open shelf below it which extends all the way back to the transom.
The owner tells me that it is a 1968 but he does not have any documentation to back it up and there is no manufactures plate. Is it possible that it might be a Rhodes, Bristol, or a Pearson, or is this a very early Typhoon?
It is currently list on Craigslist in New Haven Connecticut. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Dan

Dan:

I went to Craig's List New Haven and searched for "Cape Dory". I could not find anything circa 1968. The search parameters I used were "Cape Dory Typhoon", New Haven, 1964-1970.

Would it be possible to provide the specific photo of the alleged Cape Dory or the exact website location :?:

Does not sound like any Typhoon I've ever seen. Without a title, you may never know what it is.

Sounds like an Ensign to me, or many other variants. Maybe the owner didn’t know what the boat model happened to be.

There should be a HIN somewhere. Or was that not standard practice in sub 1970 hulls?

I am going to look at it again tomorrow night and take picture that I'll post. Outside of the hull number if I can find one, is there anything else that I should look for that is a dead give away that it is a Typhoon?

There were several Typhoon models. The main constants are cutaway forefoot full keel hull and teak trim (toerails, rubrails, etc). The enclosed cabin versions have round port lights. If you can post several pictures, this group will be able to address ruling in/out as a Ty in seconds flat.

Guys,

This is all I could save before it was deleted from Craigslist and I cannot get them any bigger without distorting them. Friday night I'll have more.
Thanks

It looks like an early Typhoon, daysailer. The hull shape and rudder both look right. It is not going to have a HID number if it is that old. It may have a builder's plate near the stern. Take some pictures of the stem head and the other hardware as the Spartan stuff is a pretty good indicator. It sure seems like a Typhoon to me, Steve.

Hello Everyone,

Attached are the photo's of the Ty in question. The owner does not have any documentation of any kind. There was a rectangle plate mounted above the tiller at one time because you can see the four screw holes. I'll keep adding the other photo's.
