Help!! Just installed a new (from Spartan) anchor shaft brachet (plain) and it is way to shinny!! How do I get it to turn green like the rest of the bronze on the boat?!?

Is this a test? Is the answer "Just wait"?

Apparently the modern way is to coat the bronze in copper and then oxidize the copper. See http://www.modernoptions.com/MOhowto.html. This got me to thinking about prop coatings. How would copper work?

Wrong! I re-read the info. You don't need to copper plate bronze first. Just buy a bottle of patina juice and paint it on. Even so, the patience and procrastanation method seems less troublesome. How can you beat something that works by itself?

Larry I installed the same thing on my CD30.It only took a month or so to turn the same color green as the rest of the Bronze. I would leave it alone and let nature take it's course. Good luck.

I think too many people underestimate the extra effort bronze lovers go through to get bronze to look just so. There is nothing more grievous than shiny bronze. We bought a new steering wheel that was shiny and we had to live with that horrible feeling for quite some time. The time honored cure is just a huge amount of patience. It helps tremendously if you can expose the object to as much weather as possible, preferably keeping yourself comfortable all the while. It does not hurt, probably helps, to spill beverages of all types on the object, not on yourself though, and save some to drink too.

Carefully watching the object during sunny spells, while drinking the unspilled beverages, almost seems to turn the color right faster. It is more likely that the alternation of salt spray and then sun is the better choice.

Good luck and patience, and hope the beverages hold up. That's what it takes. :)

I am turning green with envy at your willingness to let nature take its course. Cheers!

Dear Larry,

Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin. The copper is the prdominant metal. If left alone and exposed to the elements the copper will form a green patina of copper oxide on its surface. This oxide will protect the metal from further corosion. If you wish to speed up the process just spray the Bronze with any chemical with a chlorine content such as TILEX and the patina will appear faster.
