Any Winthrop, MA area yacht club members?

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

Are any of you members of either the Winthrop Yacht Club, the Cottage Park Yacht Club or the Pleasant Park Yacht Club in Winthrop, MA? These are possible venues for a CDSOA meeting.

Cathy,

The CDSOA database shows no current members at any of the Winthrop yacht clubs.

I have been a member of Cottage Park Yacht Club since 2012.

My Cape Dory 25 sadly devolved into a "project boat" (long story).
Many parts if anyone is interested.

I have been focused on sailing my Capri 22.

How about having a meeting in Southeastern Mass (e.g., Cape Cod, Marion, Mattapoisett)? After all, they are CAPE Dories :D

Hi Cathy,

The Winthrop and environs is a good location except for one fact. It is really adjacent to Logan airport and the jet noise can be constant and incredible depending on which runways are in use. I lived in Winthrop for several years and I know this first hand. South of the city Dorcester or Quincy or Hingham might be preferred choices. Dorchester and Quincy are proximate to the T for jaunts to town, etc. And of course The Captain of Liquidity knows that area quite well.

Winthrop isn't the easiest place to get to either. The Squantum YC (Quincy) has an upstairs hall they rent during the season, but I doubt if they rent it out during the winter as the Club is winterized but it might be worth an inquiry to confirm as it is a nice location as long as there isn't a Nor'easter blowing :D . The CDSOA is looking for a place to hold their 2019 General Membership Meeting and this year it is the Northeast Fleet’s turn to host the meeting. We would like to have it as close to Boston as possible since it is home to a major airport and two Amtrak stations which makes it more easily accessible to those CDSOA members that may want to attend but live a great distance away. Winthrop seems like a perfect location since it is so close to Boston Logan and the Winthrop hotels and B&Bs are more reasonably priced than those in Boston. We thought that one of the 3 Winthrop area yacht clubs would be a great place to have our annual meeting. We are currently tentatively pencilled in for October 26th at the Cottage Park YC in Winthrop, but this is not yet set in stone.

Since yacht clubs rent their facilities to their own members at a reduced rate, we were hoping one of our members was also a member of one of the many yacht clubs close to Boston. I know it’s a lot to ask but would you be willing to help us rent your yacht club’s meeting hall for our CDSOA meeting since, it seems, folks are adverse to Winthrop? I think we would only need to use your name, with your permission of course, as a club sponsor. It also needs to be close to at least 3 reasonably priced hotels and a few restaurants.

Since I am in New Jersey, a 5 hour drive from Boston, I can’t just drop by any of these clubs. I may also need to recruit some help from you guys to do that for us as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cathy Monaghan

Hello,

I'm a member of the Columbia Yacht Club in South Boston, MA. There is an event room on the third floor with a large porch overlooking Dorchester Bay.

It's a good room that I've rented myself on two occasions; a 90th birthday party (the ages of the two guests of honor added up to 90) and a graduation party.

I can provide more info as needed. If anyone has questions please post them.

Address: 1825 Columbia Rd, South Boston, MA 02127
