Cape Dory 25 Wanted

Post by Bradley »

Hi Everyone,

I'm interested in a Cape Dory 25 project boat in within a half day drive or so of Philadelphia but could go further for the right boat. Setting it up for minimalist distance ocean sailing engine less:

-need a boat that has a sound hull, mast and boom

-good sails a bonus
-trailer would be great too

-do not care about the interior condition, engine condition and rigging

Would especially be interested in "rescuing" a very neglected boat.

Thanks!

Hi Brad - this is not a CD 25, but may be more suitable for ocean sailing. It has an inboard diesel, which is very nice to have
when you're sleep-deprived and want to make port before dark. I'm sure it'll have lots of opportunities for fixing up and
improvements. Just a thought - Jean

If you are looking for a "fixer upper" then be prepared to look very closely at:
Rusted out iron backing plates
Gunnel drooping inward (doghouse sag)
rudder coming loose from the tiller shaft
Failed tiller shaft seal
Rot under through deck fittings, including cockpit seat hinges.
Sails not worth a hoot
Under cockpit drain fitting failure
Non-functional instrumentation
Corroded wiring
Running and standing rigging
Yard fees if no trailer
With trailer a tow vehicle
Finishing: If you want to spray paint you need a BIG compressor.
May be the previous post might turn out to be a bargain for what you're
getting yourself into.
Wish you luck,
Dick

You seem to know your needs pretty well, and I admire your sense of adventure. I would only offer that the CD25 has limited space for provisions and essentially no tankage for distance ocean sailing. Water takes up a lot of space. I'd be curious what you mean by "distance ocean sailing". It can mean different things to different people.

Hi Everyone,

My intent is to set up a boat in the most minimalist way possible with inspiration coming from Roger Taylor and the Ming Ming II (minus the junk rig) with influences from Atom Voyages as well. Perhaps participate in the Jestors challenge in the future, maybe. However, the plan has been developing further and it may be that a little bit larger boat is in order as my wife and kids would like to join me for a bit in Europe. CD 25 would not work for that. A CD 30 or 31 may be in order then. We will see how that plan develops. Currently I have a CD270 that is really nice with a low hour diesel that I would like to keep in original condition. Clearly this is not a practical pursuit. So anyway, I’m still interested in the CD25 but we'll see where this thing goes!

Thanks!

Brad
