Prop Zinc re-visited
Good morning to all
Well when I posted a message on this topic sometime back I got numerous responses, one of which suggested that "if I look at the zinc from the aft facing forward" that I would see a "screw" and would then be able to remove the old zinc.
I have ground on the aft most portion of the zinc and find no set screw. So my question is how do I get the old zinc off????? I have the cotter pin removed, but the brass nut (on the zinc) cannot be accessed with a wrench.
Suggestions please?
Thanks
Bill

Re: Prop Zinc re-visited
Bill,
Sounds like you have the original "Perry Zinc". The cotter pin goes all the way through the prop nut AND the zinc. If that is so, simply tap on the zinc towards the stern, and it shouold fall off. If there was a bolt in the aft end of the zinc, you could see it! Even if the zinc was pretty weathered. No grinding should be required.

Re: Prop Zinc re-visited
Bill,
It does sound like you have a Perry. The zinc is bonded to the brass and is not meant to be removed. The whole thing needs to be replaced and that's becoming a problem -- see my earlier posts. The Perry nut requires a 1-1/2" wrench on the zinc part (there's a flat) to be installed and removed. I guess if the zinc is badly corroded, you'll have to grind down to the brass on the forward end -- it's hexagonal -- 15/16", I think.

Hi Don & thanks for the reply
Before I do something stupid, are the threads on the prop shaft funny (as in reverse threaded)?

Plain thread. Counter clockwise to remove. BUT when I refer to the front of the zinc, I mean the Forward end -- boatwise.

Thread diameter 3/4"; No. of threads 10RH;
Nut diameter 1 3/4",
The "RH" in the number of threads stands for right handed threads, ie. clockwise to screw on, counter-clockwise to remove. As these things are often very tight it is easy to wonder if you are turning it the right direction for removal. I believe I put pipes over the ends of the wrenches to generate enough torque for removal.

Right again, Dave
I do believe you're correct about the wrench sizes.
