Typhoon weekender sail plan

Post by Graziella »

Hello hello!
I am thinking of getting new sails for my lovely Typhoon.
I'd like a jib and maybe a main (the boat came with a genoa only).

I live in the bay area and would like to get different quotes from the sailmakers here but can't find the sail plan!
Does anyone have the numbers?!?! Or maybe a website where I can get them???

Thanks!!

Peaksailsna.com is one place that has them. Sail warehouse might also.

Graziella, according to a 1981 manual, the main has a "P" measurement of 22.0 feet and an "E" of 8'9". The jib's "I"
measurement is 19'1" and the "J" is 6'2". Any sailmaker will have these dimensions. Good luck - Jean

Far different wind conditions than the Chesapeake. Good luck with your choices.

I suggest that you think about your luff dimension, and make your decision. As you know the boom height is variable. I have seen booms on Typhoons that were uncomfortably low. I was told that people prefer this for racing. I did not race my typhoon, and appreciated that the boom height was not too low. I sewed a mainsail for a friend's typhoon from a Sailrite kit. They let me know that they had the dimensions on file. But when the sail was finished, I thought the boom was too low. I think it may be best if you can specify dimensions from a sail that you like. Maybe post a "wanted to buy" listing on this board, get a used sail, and see what you like and don't like. Or maybe you know people with typhoons whose sails you could measure. Just my 2 cents worth.

Another vote for Precision Sails. Their customer service is excellent. Even though the sail construction is overseas, the sails are custom designed to your boat. Precision Sails sends you a list of very specific dimensions, including the luff measurement in your normal sailing position. If you follow their instructions exactly, the sails will fit perfectly. They will explain all the various sail cloths to meet your sailing needs and budget. The only "up-sell" I added was the offshore reinforcement package.
