Bottom Paint
This will be my first year putting Machts Nichts in. (bought last May )
The previous owner used ( i think) Pettit. I'm leaning on using it this year. note: on sale at Boat US.
What is the general feeling on this paint. I'm in the Northeast.
Now the dumb question..... how many gallons do I need?
Thanks

Re: Interlux ACT BottomKote...
Captain Heintz,
Here in Noank, I have been using InterLux ACT BottomKote(BROWN, the only true color to use on a Cape Dory, in my humble opinion!) for the last three years with very little fowling resulting! It's relatively cheap, $89.99/gal.(on sale a W.M. until April 1st.)and seems to work just fine.
Amount - just over 1 gallon! Buy 2, roll it out, then seal up what is left over for use the next year. I think it's too expensive to buy it in quart size. So I go for the first hit of two gallons and then I'm set for a couple of years. You may get away with just a gallon if you roll it out carefully. And I have heard others say that they do thin it, mostly to keep from accumulating a build up on the hull, but I sand Hanaleis' bottom with 60 grit paper in a palm sander just to rough the surface up, so I haven't noticed a build up.
Hanalei is supposed to splash on April 6th. Hope to meet up with you again this season. The get together at Napatree and Block should be great!

P.S. Don't forget to coat your prop with plain old liquid stove polish, it really keeps the critters off!!!

Re: Interlux ACT BottomKote...
Hey Dave, thanks for the info, I don't suppose it matters painting one brand over another.......Previous owner painted GREEN.... must say looks kinda nice while swimming under the hull :_)D. Stump, Hanalei wrote: Captain D.Stump,

Re: Not enough vacation for Maine...
Captain Heintz,
No, Hanalei will not be going on to Maine this year. Not enough vacation time, as Carol and I are getting married on May 5th. and will burn some of it then(Turks and Caicos Islands, all inclusive with 2 swim-up bars!!). But we are looking forward to Napatree and Block Island.
Green will slow Machts Nichts down when working to windward, hard aweather, against a Cape Dory 30 like Hanalei, but if you can stand the abuse.......only kidding!!
Talk to you soon....

Sailed to Turks & Caicos from BVI a few years back with my Dad, got the shi...... kicked out of us three days of high winds and heavy seas.

Re: Bottom Paint
hi michael,,,i use the interlux csc brown and it takes just over a gallon for one coat. i buy a gallon and also a pint. it does cost more that way but i live in a condo and storage is tight! anyway i recommend buying the deluxe roller frame by redtree(west marine) and a mohair roller cover. last year i just grabbed a paint roller set they had out front...it did not roll well,,slip, slide, roll, not roll,,someone said go down and buy the better roller..big difference...
also, bought new interlux chocolate brown paint and primer . i'm going to repaint the boot stripe. i'm sure i won't use much of the paint so if you (or anyone else) need some boot stripe your welcome to have what i have left over.
good luck...
