New Midship Bomar Hatch

Post by hilbert »

`The Boat` never had a midship hatch, only this piece of plastic. A few years ago, I purchased a used Bomar cast hatch on ebay and the time has arrived for installation.

There were cracks on two sides of the frame. I suspect that these cracks were created by water intrusion which had frozen. At some point the plastic lens was rebedded, but the cosmetic damage remained. By the way, the plastic was rebedded with pure silicone which must be completely removed.

First step was to inject epoxy into the cracks and clamp them close.

I then covered the inside edges with strips of #1708 biaxial cloth.

As I did with the other hatch, I inserted 1/2" rods of G10 and then tapped 1/4"-20 thread for truss head screws.

Someday I'll replace the lens and repaint the frame. Now, my priority is to finish painting the cabin and install hardware.

Nice work. You'll really appreciate the improved ventilation.
