I am planning to install a Simpson Lawrence Manual Windlass on my CD 330. I need to know the proper place to mount it. Also the best way to anchor it to the deck.
Thanks

CD 330 Manual Windlass Question

Re: CD 330 Manual Windlass Question
Bob, I installed a S.L. Vertical windlass ( manual ) on my CD33. I am not familiar with the 330 but if the anchor locker is the same, there is just enough room aft of the lid to install two bolts on each side of the bulkhead seperating the V berth from the anchor locker. I put the deck pipe in the lid just forward if the windlass and this works fine if you do not need to get into the locker when tension is on the rode. I use 50 feet of chain and 150 feet of rope on a 35 pound plow and have had no problems with the setup. I am just about to change my windlass on Kestrel (CD 330 #127). When I bought the boat it had a single speed S.L. Hyspeed 510 mounted on centerline ahead of the staysail stay. However, in that location the rode only dropped about a foot before it encountered the curve of the hull in the chain locker, and though it would slide down the hull somewhat it would ultimatly pile up too fast and jam the deck hawse hole. Now I'm installing a 2 speed S.L. Seatiger 555 on centerline just aft of the staysail stay. To do so I'm doing away with the staysail boom, and installing the windlass where the boom gooseneck bolted through the deck. This means that I'll have to install tracks on top of the cabin to take the staysail sheets, but that is a whole nuther project! This allows for a good clear drop of the rode into the chain locker. Since I don't yet have the windlass in hand I'm not sure of the footprint, but I'm expecting I'll have to have a stainless plate made to mount on top of the teak bow platform in this area to make a large enough base for the windlass. If you are interested, I have a completely rebuilt S.L. Hyspeed 510 for sale as a result of all of this! The folks at S.L. suggest a 1/4 in. spacer of UHDP plastic sheet between the aluminum base of the windlass and whatever you're mounting it on. While you have your head stuck in the chain locker I recommend you cut/drill more drain holes in the bottom of the locker, and maybe even replace the fill and vent hoses for the forward tank.
