Self tending boom preventer

Post by Steve Laume »

Has anyone rigged a preventer for their staysail boom?

I have a bail on the end that I use to tie it off to the forward lower shroud to keep it out of the way when not in use. I have tried using it to prevent the boom but the angle is wrong for it to work. It seems like you would need a mid boom bail with the preventer made fast to the first stanchion base. I generally like the self tending boom. It is especially useful when short tacking in tight quarters. The problems seem to arise when the breeze is light or I am running pretty much dead down wind. I know I could jibe down wind at a lesser angle but it would still be nice to have better control of that little boom, Steve.

in a different boat I ran a set of lines from the boom to both sides and ran them thru small blocks to the the railing on both starboard and port, added couple of cleats close to the cockpit, easy to reach and not perfect but worked, just a thought.
Usually the load is not that big and get away with s simple set up.
In that set up can also cleat both lines and have the boom centered when not in use.
just a thought
