CD Owners: How did the factory install lightning protection?

Post by Kurt »

I sail a CD26 and one of my lingering todo's has been to install some type of permanent lightning protecton...I do carry a jumper cable with a copper plate to dangle in the water, but I've always wondered how the factory did it. I imagine it may have been an option on some models and years and standard equipment at other times. Any and all replies are encouraged

My 1980 CD28 (hull 159) has a sintered bronze grounding plate on the starboard side of the keel which is through-bolted to the bilge. Electrical connections are to the bolts. Every thru-hull, every chain plate, the engine, and presumably the mast are connected to the grounding plate with solid copper wire. It appears to be 10 or 12 gage wire.
