PERRY NUTS DOOMED?

Post by John R. »

I phoned Perry's Boat Harbor this morning to order more perry nuts for our CD30. I spoke with a lady by the name of Virginia who was very helpful but she had some bad news regarding the zincs.

Evidently Perry's did not manufacture the zincs but they do hold the patent. The molds for the nuts were owned by Perrys and produced by a third party whom has gone out of business and the molds can't be located to date. Apparently the molds cost around $20 - $30 K and so they are in no hurry to make new sets, unless of course they know a strong market exists.

The 3/4" #10RH zinc was the most popular and so of course those are gone. They do have some of other less popular zincs.

I was told that anyone concerned about the future availability of the "original" Perry Nut should contact Tamara Perry and voice their concerns. These are the best shaft zincs going for CD's so let her know you want them made available.

Beckman (508-994-9674) has seven of the 3/4" #10s left --They had ten but I bought three. The price is the same as last year in spite of their knowing they are now collector's items. . He has some other sizes also.
He mentioned to me that Perry is a difficult company to work with. Apparently there's only one person left from the family business. BTW, the link below doesn't work.

Hmmm, maybe I should buy a few too. The Martyr unit from Canada looks pretty serious, I'd like to see a photo of the Perry Nut version. I'll let everyone know how it goes when we haul out.

Don,

I just tried the link http://www.perrysboatharbor.com/ and it worked fine from here.

Spring is coming.

Don,

West Marine is selling a new prop nut this year which is branded "Martyr" and made by the same company that made their prop nuts in previous years. It seems to be improved over the units that have been discussed on this board. I think my posts on this are under "Prop Nuts" or "Prop Zincs." I have one in hand, but it has not met Parfait yet, so I don't know how they are going to get along.

Sorry Don, I screwed up the link. Just type it into your browser location bar. The website works fine. Someone said the e-mail from the site didn't work, I don't know about that because I hadn't used it. I just sent them a mail and I'll see if mine goes through okay. I called them earlier and didn't send an e-mail.

Thanks, Ken,
The big difference with the Perry is that it the zinc encapsulates the brass, giving a permanent ground and it can't fall off. But, of course, when it's gone the whole thing is gone -- in my case, in one season. And they cost $28.
