Insurance for 25

Post by casampson »

I'm thinking of insuring my CD 25 against damage due to storms, accidents, etc. Equally important, I want to be sure I'm covered in case my boat causes damage to another. Any advice as to what kind of insurance to buy and from whom? I have read in previous threads that Progressive is good for boat owners.

Also, if my boat is being hauled from point A to point B, does the transport company provide coverage?

Thanks in advance.

I used Progressive and had a loss last year. The salvage alone was 20K. I can't recommend them enough.

Call boatus. They use Gieco and you get towing as part of it. You may think you will never need it well.......

I checked with BOATUS 23 years ago for insurance on my Typhoon... they want 10% of what I paid for boat & trailer per year!

When I first got Brigitta I checked with Metropolitan as they were an affiliate company of my employer. They wouldn't insure a boat as old as mine but referred me to Progressive. I have now been with Progressive ever sense and just recently switched our autos from USAA to Progressive.
Great company and wonderful customer service!

Mike:

Hopefully you will not find out if Progressive is a good sailboat insurance co. but as I am sure you know and are watching TS Alberto is heading for Niceville with landfall sometime during the day on Memorial Day. I know a lot of special activities have been planned for the Pensacola area on Memorial Day. Mother Nature can be a cruel mistress.

News of TS Alberto on this thread prompted me to accelerate my research for an insurance policy for my CD 25. Geico quoted $431 for full coverage, while US Boat came in a $333 for full coverage. The deductibles are higher than I would like, but the US Boat seems like a reasonable price, especially considering that it comes with up to $3000 of towing per year. It is a little surprising that Geico underwrites all US Boat claims, yet it is more expensive to use Geico directly.

I will probably end up with US Boat, but I am going to check with Mapfre insurance to see if they can insure my boat. I already have homeowners and automobile insurance with Mapfre, so their may be some discounts available.

Hey Roberto!

No problems here other than some high water... I was in Winston-Salem from Thurs thru yesterday, hence the lack of a reply. I did lash my new mainsail before going... :D
