launched! but where is everybody else?

Post by Megunticook »

Always aiming to launch before Memorial Day, this year I was on the ball and got her in 2 weeks early. I figured I was an early bird, but didn't expect to have practically the entire harbor to myself! She looks so lonely out there amid all those empty moorings, doesn't she?

It's a good feeling to have that checked off my list, though (so much else to get done this spring). It does seem like fewer and fewer boats go in before Memorial Day--in fact last year it seemed like the harbor didn't really start to fill up until July--and emptied out fast after Labor Day. By mid-October, when I hauled out, there was hardly anyone left.

That's Camden Harbor on Penobscot Bay, looking north from Laite Beach toward Sherman Cove. Lovely spring evening, end of a beautiful if blustery "Northwest" day.

Yup. Spring has barely sprung in Maine. I also find myself lonely in my mooring field in Harpswell, Maine. I had hoped to finish some brightwork maintenance, but the temperatures are barely 50ish and breezy and the varnish wants to stay in the can! But the trees are starting to leaf, the peepers are singing at dusk, the robins and the herons are busy, the grass is green and growing. All indicators that we are, indeed, about to turn that corner... Got the rigging done and first sea trial tomorrow!
