Typhoon 22

Post by raieva »

After owning my Pacific Seacraft 37 and living aboard her in Key West for the last 10 years we've decided to move ashore and sell her. As soon as we do, I'm going to be aggressively looking for a CD Typhoon 22 for day sailing and some overnighters. My question is we have a new Merc 6hp short shaft; does anyone know if it'll fit on the CD 22?

The short shaft could be an issue in any sort of chop... the prop might be bouncing out of water as much as it's in water.
If you really want to use that engine, a Typhoon Senior may be a better choice since the outboard would be a foot or 2 closer to mid-ship and you could more easily modify the mount board (in the well) if you need to lower the engine some.

Just my 2 cents from previously owning 2 Typhoon weekenders and 2 CD25s.

I have a typhoon sr. with a 4hp. I was looking to replace it with a 6 hp and looking at long shafts. Everyone told me I needed a long shaft. I believed my 4 hp was a long shaft. I took the 4 hp motor out to use on a dinghy and discovered it was NOT a long shaft. ON the typhoon, the distance from where the motor mounts in the well to the actual water is only 10 inches. The short shaft that I believed was a long shaft works just fine for me because I use the motor primarily in the harbor and river where there is no big swell, I have been a few miles off shore when the wind and swell kicked up and had not problems. Knowing that a long or short shaft will work well gives you a lot more shopping flexibility.

Good Luck,
