Sources for New Tillers

Post by MHBsailor »

Looking for sources for a new tiller for my Typhoon Senior. I imagine it’s the same as a CD 22 tiller (but if it isn’t please let me know). Thanks!

If you like wood projects, know a bit about epoxy and have some clamps, tillers are pretty easy to make. I've made several over the years for myself and friends.

When we were kids sailing and racing along the Jersey shore, we broke some of the non-laminated tillers. We replaced them with laminated versions that held up much better.

You can usually find thin strips of mahogany, spruce or whatever on-line. If the strips are thin enough, steaming is not required for gentle curves. The form can be a scrap of 2x6 or plywood with some blocks screwed to it. Shaping is easy with a surform tool, plane and sander. An easy and very satisfying little project that you'll enjoy each time you sail your boat

But those ready-made ones on-line look nice also.

If you want to build one, 3/4 of the way down on John Stone's page here he walks you through it.
