Boot Stripe

Post by Tstec »

We're the original CD boot stripes immediately above the bottom paint or was the a space between the bottom paint and the boot stripe?
Thanks

I just took a quick look at the brochure linked above and it appears most had a "reveal" between the bottom paint and the boot top.

Thanks, I thought I saw the same space in the the black and white brochure pics but I have not seen a CD painted that way. I guess it is difficult to reproduce. I'm not sure l want to attempt it.

the space between your bottom paint and the boot stripe is very easy to achieve. make it the width of a roll of 3m blue tape. the boot stripe can then be the width of a wider roll of tape or multiple lengths of tape butted together. paint the bottom first, leave the tape over your reveal line and then paint the boot stripe. once the boot stripe is done wait a day or 3 and apply tape to the top edge and the bottom edge of the tape that is covering the reveal line and remove the middle tape and paint that. I use antifouling for that line and the boot stripe.

Raven had the original reveal and brown boot stripe when I bought her. It did make painting the bottom and the boot stripe very easy as well as looking pretty sharp, when first launched. When it came time to paint, I would prep the bottom and run a line of tape over the reveal and another along the top of the boot stripe. I would lightly sand the stripe and wipe it off with solvent. I could then paint the bottom, being careful not to paint onto the stripe and immediately paint the boot stripe. As soon as the stripe paint set, I would pull all the tape. You don't want to wait until the paint gets fully cured to remove the tape. After she was in the water for a while, the white stripe always got grungy looking and was hard to clean.

I eventually eliminated the reveal by bringing the bottom paint up to the boot stripe. This helped a bit but made painting a two step process. I first had to tape off the stripe to paint the bottom. Once the bottom paint dried, I had to tape off the top and bottom of the stripe to paint it. At my last haul out I raised the entire boot stripe to bring the bottom paint up a bit more. This was not an easy job to get right. It did prove to be worthwhile as I get less fouling on the stripe.

I think the reason you see so few boats with the original reveal is that our boats tend to get a bit heavier as they mature. This is much like many of their owners. In the case of our boats it is not so much the boat itself but the gear we tend to add. The reveal looked great but Raven stays in for two years between haul outs and it never looked good later in the schedule, Steve.
