CD 25 rig for sale

Post by typhooner »

Selling spars and rigging (mast, boom, standing rigging) from a scuttled CD 25. I purchased these a few years ago with intent of using them for a yawl conversion of my Tartan 34. My plans have changed and these items are now looking for a new home. Straight, not damaged, though stored out-doors for several years. $250. Local pick up only. Located East End of Long Island (NY), easily accessible from New England via New London ferry.

Was the rig sold? I have a buddy who recently lost his entire rig and sails last week, which were stored in his storage barn. A fast sweeping forest fire razed his property and nearby neighbors, which was started accidently by others, up wind. The boat is a 1977 CD25 which was luckily stored outside on a trailer, which only had 2 tires burn up in a grassy area. His old Cessna 170, full of Av Gas was not as lucky as it totally melted, other than the burned up 6 cyl engine and spring steel landing gear. Lots more was lost. We are looking for new, or older rigs, and have not found one yet. I started a topic here last week, but can not find it.
PLEASE advise here, or direct email.
If anyone here knows of other available used rigs, or has had good luck with a new rig, please let us know here.
Thanks

Sincere condolences to your friend.

Yes, I still have it. Unmolested, though stored out of doors for several years. Mast, boom, and standing rigging. Unfortunately quite a few miles away from you on the East end of Long Island (New York).

Best of luck to your friend. Please let me know if interested.

thanks for the note. I will tell my friend, but that is a really long drive, especially in the winter.
Just out of curiosity, what work would need to be done to the rig? And what year boat did it come off of? Do you have any pics I can show him?
Thanks

To the best of my recollection, it was off a 1976 CD25. I myself haven't used the rig but I inspected it carefully before I bought it. There really should be no work required other than a thorough cleaning. The standing rigging is there and functional. There are sailors that make a point of replacing all standing rigging every five years, certainly every 10. By those criteria it should probably be replaced although it is complete and undamaged.

As for transport, if you have any ties to the rowing community, you might be able to hitch a ride on a boat trailer for a small donation. Long rowing shells travel up and down the east coast (and across the country) on a regular basis. The mast wouldn't really take up any more room.

Good luck.

Thank you very much for the very good info. I will tell my buddy about all this.
If I were racing hard, I might change all wire in 5 yrs. My cruising boats were good for at 10 yrs, with one swage joint replaced with an obvious rusty broken wire strand in a lower swage.
Btw, for anyone following this, we priced a new mast complete, as if it were to be paid for by the plaintiffs insurance. I had never asked before about new mast prices and was bowled over.
I had already priced new wire standing rigging for my own 1975 CD25, at $1530 with lower sta-locs. A complete turnkey new mast installed with boom is about $6300. That does not include the sails, or running rigging, furler, etc.
But I have never known anyone else who lost everything ABOVE the deck, all at one time! Just taking all the stuff off one mast to install on a new mast with existing boom is not too bad, but not cheap. Starting from 0 is unbelievably scary expensive.
Thanks

Typhooner, we have discussed this and Rick is thinking we should look closer at this possibility, and thinks he might have a trucker friend who makes a loop up there who might be helpful.
Are you close enough to your mast storage to shoot a couple pics showing the lower winch area and top of the mast and boom for us? We obviously do not know if you are near your boating area or back in the city, so do not know if this is convenient for you. If this were to happen I will be the one helping my first time sailor buddy out and teaching him how to rig, tweek, and splash down his CD25 the first time here in west Florida.
We welcome direct contact.
Thanks

Hi Guys,

Assuming you completed the deal and this rig is no longer available? Or is it? :D I have a CD 25 (bought without the rig) and am in need of one. I may just have one built, though my wallet likes the thought of a replacement rig esp from a sistership.
Any info would be a big help! Cheers~

We have a 'gentleman's agreement' though haven't been able to work out the details on shipping yet. I hope and expect that we'll proceed. If the unexpected happens and it's available, I'll let you know. Thank you.

I have a rig from a dolphin 24 that might work.
Located in upstate ny.
Possible shipping to Tampa fl area, but no guarantee when it would happen , ie it occurs sporadically that we send a truck between facilities large enough to hold it.

Biggest problem might be the mast track, as it's old style, otherwise all there
