LOA vs. LOD

Post by DoryBoy »

The LOA for a CD30 is listed on sailboatdata.com as 30.50'. Is that the actual overall length or is it actually the length on deck (LOD)? It seems there could be variation with bow sprits, especially with larger or smaller anchors hanging over the end. Thank you.

Scroll up to the top of this page then click on the "ABOUT CAPE DORYS" link. Once that page opens up, either scroll down the page or click on the "Specifications of Cape Dory Boats" link. Then click on the link for the "Cape Dory 30". Once that page opens up you'll find the specs. BUT, the figure given for the CD30's LOA on the specs page is indeed the boat's LOD. The LOA for the CD30 is 32' 2.5".

Also on the specs page for the Cape Dory 30, near the bottom of the page, you'll find a link to the CD owners manuals. Click on that then select the manual that includes the CD30. It doesn't matter which year you choose, the boats didn't change much from year to year. Anyway, if you haven't already done so, print yourself a copy of the owners manual.

Hope this helps,
Cathy

Same for the 28... LOA does not include the bowsprit.

You always have to be careful with LOA specs. Traditionally a bowsprit is considered a spar. Cape Dory always followed that tradition.

Yup, and length is referred to as xx on deck, xxx sparred length.

And early CD28s didn't have a bowsprit, just a weird bronze fitting.
