A Reefing Jib with Zippered Bonnet

Post by John Stone »

On a previous post regarding our refined jib downhaul system, Steve G asked for pictures and details of the zippered genoa bonnet we use.

I posted the photos and description of how it works on our website.

It's a time tested and seaman like solution available for those sailors that may not want a furler.
It has worked well for us and so far we have no desire to go to a furler. For those not familiar with a bonneted jib I have attached a photo below. The genoa on left has a bonnet attached with a zipper that can be unzipped to turn the genoa into working jib. The zipper is visible in the photo running diagonally down from top left to center bottom.

I was watching an on-line video the other day about Bernard Moitessier and captured a screen shot of a bonneted jib on his legendary steel ketch Joshua. It’s a lace on bonnet. Very practical. Of course roller furling jibs have pretty much regulated them to the dust bin these days, except for Falmouth Quay Punts, Smacks, pilot cutters, etc ... and the Far Reach.
