Want to buy used Sailrite
Want to buy used Sailrite
Sailrite sewing machine for making Typhoon sails.
Re: Want to buy used Sailrite
FYI I used an old Necci machine to make my TY sails. Worked fine, just a little hard when going through the heaviest multiple layers of sailcloth. No worries.

Similar story here, I use an old Pfaff (for which I paid $150). Check out the book Sailmakers Apprentice in there the author provides a list of suitable sewing machines. Most of the old cast Iron machines are capable of sewing Ty sails.

Here is one. I am not connected to it in any way, nor do I know the seller.

Upon taking a second look, it has already sold. Sorry about that.

Re: Want to buy used Sailrite
Tstec,
I don’t have a sailrite for sale, but I do have one. It’s the basic model—straight stitch only. We have used ours for canvas work. It’s been a reliable machine.
Couple things I’d mention. I think they are a good machine for the price. Not suggesting you can’t do the job with another machine. But, it will sew through almost anything. I did not get one with the “monster wheel” but I sure would recommend it. And I think the zig zag capability is worth having. We will upgrade ours by adding the monster wheel which makes hand sewing possible but also reduces clutch slippage on really thick material.
Back when we got ours they sold the base model with an inexpensive foot pedal. The better pedal was an upgrade. Don’t know if the basic cheap pedal is the standard but if they do, I’d get the better pedal.

Thanks, for all the feedback. I still do not have a machine. I will let you know when I do.

Re: Want to buy used Sailrite
Some comments from my dear wife Jenn, who owns a Sailrite.
1. Harder to sew in a straight line on large pieces of fabric. What helps is if you have a large room with no carpeting, which allows you to slide the fabric around easily. Sail lofts have floors like this.
2. Clean the needle with alcohol after sewing coated sailcloth.
3. The Sailrite videos make many of the projects seem easier than they are in practice, but . . .
4. Sailrite is excellent with their phone support, which we have used often on our various projects.
Good luck!

Re: Want to buy used Sailrite
I decided to by a new blemished sailrite machine. Blemished means some paint did not adhere to the machine during the powder coating process. Sailrite gives a 15% discount on blemished sewing machines.
