Typhoon Single point hoist

I recently bought my Typhoon.

I enjoy the boat a lot, but we are Hurricane prone here on the Gulf Coast, and I would be one to remove the boat from the water to it's trailer for such. I am lucky that my Yacht Club has 2 hoists for members to use

On the deck of the cabin is that little access hatch that opens into the bilge. I have notoced that some Typhoons had a sling point set into the lead under that hatch and some don't...Mine is one without it.

I read somewhere that someone had stated not to put in a single poing lift there as it could or will pull the lead loose from the glass in the keel....

Is this true? Is this something that CD put there so one could if they chose to like a new purchase option thing...? Or is it jusrt a way to suck out the water that collects there?

While I am not an authority on this item, I have heard that this ring was put into the lead in order to drop it into the hull during construction. There is a shot of that process in one of the Cape Dory "A Standard of value" videos. ( I love those BTW.) Here are my thoughts.

We had a 1976 Typhoon and it had one of those lifting rings but I never used it to lift the boat. Always had other methods available as I worked in a marina with a travel lift and a good trailer launch ramp. Others may chime in whether they used it or not. The keelboat insertion design and layup of the glass over the lead ballast and mush fill around it would need to be strong enough to support the rest of the boat other than the keel. If that is all sound enough I would think lifting it would require watching the fore and aft balance carefully, maybe needing a couple stout fellows on the ground with lines etc.

I'm no expert either, but until one chimes in... I've read post from folks claiming that the eye was meant to get the lead into the hull, not lift the boat, and that makes sense. I've also read a post from at least one person who has in fact used it to lift their boat on a regular basis. Probably also makes sense, given the generally sturdy Cape Dory construction, but that doesn't mean you won't run into problems if you try it on your boat. My Ty has the eye, and I wouldn't be comfortable using it, especially because I have no idea what kind of corrosion might be going on under the bilge.

My boat, #1777, doesn't have that ring there nor any sign that there ever was one there.... I wonder how the lead was put in in this case...?

As there isn't a ring one would have to be installed so the corrosion issues wouldn't apply in this case....

I'll have to talk to the Boat yard Guru's..I'm very fortunate that my Guru happens tgo be the Boat Master for America's US Oplympic Sailing team and he is sought after for his expertise on many many things on all types of boats, from Opti's to Foiling Cats....and anything in between...

After frurther talks with the Boat yard, it's been trashed as not a good idea....
