Standing Rigging Adjustment for Cape Dory 30K
Is there some information on how to adjust the standing rigging on a Cape Dory 30 Ketch especially the mizzen mast rigging. I have a cable connecting the mizzen and main and it is very loose! Any help would be appreciated.

The cable between the main and the mizzen is called the triadic. It is constructively the forestay for the mizzen and should have tension on it.
I have seen some who do lots of open ocean sailing who remove the triadic and only use the mizzen down wind. I have kept the triadic and find the mizzen useful in balancing the boat with the wind forward of the beam. Those who leave the triadic off do so to eliminate the possibility of losing both masts in the event of a rigging failure.
Does your triadic have a turnbuckle? Mine does not ( and how could it be adjusted). I adjust the main mast first and then use the 2 backstays for the mizzen to put tension on the triadic, then adjust the lowers.

You either go aloft or you lead one end of the triatic stay to the deck.

Yes, exactly... when I said "deck," I meant deck level access, as opposed to needing to go aloft.mgphl52 wrote:Or to a cleat on the mizzen mast...Neil Gordon wrote:>>Does your triadic have a turnbuckle? Mine does not ( and how could it be adjusted).<<

Wouldn't the triadic be a fixed length so the masts would stay aligned? IT bugs me to no end when I see a boat with two sticks at different angles, Steve.

Not always... depends on the characteristics of the design and the 'current' sail plan...Steve Laume wrote:Wouldn't the triadic be a fixed length so the masts would stay aligned? IT bugs me to no end when I see a boat with two sticks at different angles, Steve.
Sometimes a little extra rake in a mizzen balances better.
