Fighting with Typhoon winches! :-(

Post by Graziella »

Hello hello,

I had the brilliant idea to service my winches, they are Gibb England.
It was supposed to be a pretty simple job: open, clean, add some winch grease and close!
The thing is that I cannot close them anymore. As you can see from the photos, I can't push them all the way down and don't know what to do!
Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

It looks like it is hung up on the pawls. I have used a stiff wire to push them in as well as turning the drum to flatten them until it drops in.

I agree. I suspect it is the pawl or some other protrusion that is sprung out (probably due to spring pressure) and must be folded in to drop the drum into place. Look inside the drum or perhaps it's the parts on the base as I can't really tell from the photo. Sometimes you need to hold them in with a small gauge wire or even a thin zip tie that you can withdraw as the drum drops into place. Don't force it no matter what. It's a matter of considering every part until you determine which one is the culprit and then developing a plan.

Keep us posted.
