Have any of you stumbled across the website for Timothy M. Sullivan Model Yachts? He is a custom model yacht builder in Maine and recently completed a very detailed model (down to the blocks, winches and compass) of the Cape Dory 28 sloop. I haven't got a clue as to what a model like this costs but I thought it was beautiful and thought I'd share this info with the rest of the CD community.

Re: Not CD-specific by some may be interested
there was a post a long while back from a guy who had built a typhoon model and was selling them. it was absolutely gorgeous and very detailed. much like this 28 model. he was selling them for about $1500.00. would have loved to have one but i'm saving my pennies for the next step up.
if anyone is interested, dig deep in the archives.

Re: Nice yacht, but how do ya reef the main?.....
Captain Monaghan,
Wow, what a model! Only question is how do ya reef the main? There are no cringles in the mains'l, and no reefing lines! Did you look at the picture that shows the sheet winch and the bronze base for it? Amazing the detail!!
Seriously, I'm going to contact him and see what he would charge for a CD-30 model. I'll let ya know....
Can't wait for July and the raft up at Napatree and the race to Block Island. Will you and your crew be coming up?

Re: Nice yacht, but how do ya reef the main?.....
Dave,
I don't know how you would reef that main. Maybe it costs more for extra cringles and reefing lines (they'd cost more from a real sailmaker) so they decided the model didn't need them. There are even tiny cowl vents, cleats, chocks and engine controls, so you'd think they'd include the reef points as well -- go figure.
Anyway, we will probably sail from Morgan, NJ to Block Island for the rendezvous and then to Onset where we'll leave the boat and visit with my brother in Brewster, MA for a few days before returning to the boat and NJ. If my husband and I can allot the time, we'll do the Shelter Island raft-up, the fleet sail, the race and the rendezvous. But we won't be able to include the cruise to Maine -- it's just too much.
I'm saving a week's vacation so that we can charter in the Caribbean, probably in the BVI, this Fall or late Winter 2002. It would be great if we could get a boatload of 8. Care to join us?
If we don't charter in the Caribbean we may sign up with one of the sailing schools for an offshore cruise. The Maryland School of Sailing and Seamanship has some nice cruises available. You can cruise with them from St Thomas-Trinidad, St Thomas-Norfolk, Norfolk-Bermuda, or Norfolk-St Thomas. They also do a DelMarVa circumnavigation which sounds interesting. We're already ASA certified through 106, so Celestial Navigation (107) and Offshore Passagemaking (108) are logical next steps.
I wish I had a couple months of vacation time.

Re: Not CD-specific by some may be interested
I want to thank you all for jamming up my website...just about nearly tripled my traffic
. Seriously, thanks for your comments: the CD 28 was a great boat to build and I look forward to doing more. The person who makes my name plates owns a CD 30, and I can't wait for spring and to get out on the water. I apologize for not having more information on the site as I wiped it out (yes, accidentally) a month ago, and have been too busy building models to redo it. I won't use this forum to sell my models, but wanted to let you all know that the model was 1" scale, so about 30" long including the bowsprit and 42" tall. I do build to other scales, but prefer larger models. It was a 'detailed' model, meaning it had most detail of the original boat. Reefing was intended, but left off due to time constraints (it was a Christmas present). I used your site (especially the online manuals) to help along the building process; I have never seen a better owner's group site than this one--Thank-you!!
Please email me tim@sullboat.com if I can answer any further questions.
Thanks,
Tim

Re: Cost of 1" scale CD-30 model......
Catherine,
I heard back from Tim Sullivan on Friday on what it would cost to commission him to build a 1" scale CD-30. Here's what he quoted:
"The cost for a CD-30 is $1900 for a detailed model, with all major and most minor detail, or $3800 for museum quality with the detail looking like the original. A moderate detail model can be built for $1400, but will only have most of the major detail. The CD-28 on my website was a detailed model, but not museum quality. Sails are included, but may be omitted for $50 per sail. ---50% deposit required upon commission. ---remainder and shipping charge ($50 for most sizes) due upon completion."
He was real prompt in getting back to me. I'd jump at the detailed model, but getting the teak refinished and launching Hanalei is more important right now! Maybe I should tell the new Bride about this, who knows, maybe a Wedding gift or Birthday present is in order for the Captain!!!!

Re: Cost of 1" scale CD-30 model......
Dave,
Be careful about negotiating with your new bride. My bride of many years announced yesterday as we were driving to Parfait, one of our three real boats (plus inflatable), that she could conceive of a need for a couple more iron skillets. On inquiring as to how she could possibly use three skillets, she announced that she would use two simultaneously to cook with and keep one as a spare. She thought that it was reasonable and fair since I (we) have three real boats. Does this sound familar to anyone? Is she really planning to stockpile arms? The cornbread is good, but not THAT good. Now three honey containers, that makes much more sense.
I have also communicated with Tim Sullivan. He is very responsive and booked up for several months ahead. He also does half hulls in various configurations. Maybe, when we swallow the anchor, we will succumb.
