Typhoon or CD22?

Re: Typhoon or CD22?
I previously owned a Typhoon and, as a result of two foot-itis, moved up to a 22D. Some observations:
-the Ty is easier to sail with very little if any weather helm.
-I race against Typhoons and they are very close in speed to my 22.
-in the Ty, you sit much closer to the water which some may like and some may not.
-the Ty is not for overnights for most of us.
-if you have 4 people on the boat, the 22 is more comfortable.
-being significantly bigger, the 22 does require more maintenance.
-the 22 has 6 inches more draft and mast raising is a bit more challenging.
-when the wind blows hard, I feel more secure in the 22.
One of each would be perfect.

Re: Typhoon or CD22?
I am planning on keeping the boat in the water and maybe pull it out to clean the bottom a couple of time a month!
So everyone loves the Typhoon!
I am going to see one this weekend and I am seeing a CD22 as well! I'll keep you posted!
Thank you ALL!!

Re: Typhoon or CD22?
We restored a Typhoon and had it before our current CD. I would really consider the type of sailing you want to do, daysailing, weekending or trailering, moving in different lakes to help choose. Sounds like you are in the water most of the time so either the Ty or a 22 would probably suffice. I'd then go with whatever you find around you that you fancy and has the right amount of TLC needed for you to do and is the right price. Don't get too hung up on the right one! Just get one and go sailing. Our boat needed a complete restoration but there are plenty of Typhoons out there that don't.
I don't think you could go wrong with either though I will put my two cents in for the Typhoon as that boat just has a quality, sailing and quality of line, that just hits most people right. I had my old Ty in 35kts on Lake Superior in May, all reefed down and plunging to windward. It was a cold, wet ride but she did just fine and I never once felt unsafe. That's a big compliment for a 19 footer. She also has been fun to sail on city lakes here in Mpls in light winds.
My friend now has our old Typhoon and will never part with it.
Good luck with your search and tell us how you do.

Re: Typhoon or CD22?
When I was out looking for a boat to learn on I was looking at a lot of boats. I was a a dealer here in mpls and he told me that the best boat to learn on was a typhoon. he had one and sold it and wished he had it back. so I happened to be at a different dealer and he had just got one in so I bought it. it saved my bacon a few times when wind came up and I had too much sail out. I learned a lot with that boat. I still have it it is for sale. I bought a CD31 in the fall of 2015 and would never have been able to sail that boat by myself if I did not learn on the ty. The typhoon was sailed on a lake in the metro area of MN. I now sail out of bayfield. Paul's brother told me he had learned on a typhoon as well and now sails his 36 ft. I have never heard of anyone that actually sailed the boat to ever say anything bad about the boat.
IN fact because of that boat is why I chose the CD 31. I was looking at tartan's pearson's etc and remembered that the typhoon had helped me learn to sail. I have just gotten back from a full week of sailing on Lake superior and I love the 31. I would no have that boat if I had not learned on the typhoon.
Not trying to sell you my boat. it is for sale can be seen at hooper yachts.com. If it does not sell I may just keep it and sail it on a loacal lake again next year.

Re: Typhoon or CD22?
I am here in Newport Beah - almost 7 hours driving from San Francisco and can't wait for tomorrow!!
Typhoon at 10 am and CD22 at 4pm!!
Robryan - thanks for letting me know that you are selling one! I tried to find the posting on yachts.com but couldn't find any cape dory, can you send me again the link here or in a private message? Thanks!
Also, quick queston - I am looking at a Typhoon in Colorado, this one here, http://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/65568
The owner just told me that in his boat the mast goes thru the top of the deck and into the fitting inside the V-Berth. That's not the original layout, right?
Thanks!

Re: Typhoon or CD22?
Hi Graziella,
The owner is correct in what he told you. In the early days of Cape Dorys, the one piece mast passed downward through a hole in the roof of the (cuddy) cabin and sat in a metal plate that was secured to the lower hull. This setup was known as being a keel stepped mast.
As time passed on, newer model Cape Dorys were made with a hinge setup on top of the cuddy that would support the mast as well as to allow the upper portion of the mast to fold backwards. This was quit handy for DIYers when launching and hauling the boat. In rare occasions, it allowed the boat to pass under low bridges and some locks on a canal.
I'm taking the liberty of assuming that you are female. The hinged mast support is a huge improvement for smaller Dorys. A keel stepped mast takes many strong helpers, along with the erection of a gin pole, crane or other lifting device
e to step or unstep a keel stepped mast. A hinged setup is so much easier to work with on smaller hulls.
These are my thoughts on the mast issues. There might be other purists who would argue with my viewpoints. BTW, as I type, I have two keel stepped Tys sitting in my yard. They are old. I/m thinking maybe I should sell them???
Good luck in your pursuit.

Buonasera Graziella:
I know you are new to this board and may not yet be familiar with the background of some of our members and frequent posters.
"Oswego John" (or OJ as he affectionately known by most of us) is the absolute most knowledgeable person concerning Cape Dory sailboats, particularly Cape Dory Typhoons. His knowledge is encyclopedic. Whatever he tells you about a Cape Dory Typhoon is 100% accurate.
To chime in on a Ty versus a CD 22, I was the caretaker of a Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender for several years. I miss her. I really miss her.
Best wishes on your search. Any Cape Dory you select will be a joy to sail and take care of.

oooooooooOOOOoooo!!!
This is an incredible group, thank youuuu, you are helping me sooo much!
Oswego John - very happy to virtually meet you!! I totally see the potential problem with a keel stepped mast...uhm...definitely need to keep this in mind. And when it comes to safety? Do you think that one is better than the other one?
Roberto! Very Italian! Thanks for the introduction and advice!
Whoever is selling or thinking of selling a Typhoon Weekender... please pvt me!!

Re: Typhoon or CD22?
On the keel-stepped vs cabin-stepped issue, there can be a concern for older cabin-stepped mast regarding the steel structure embedded in the top to provide support. If you search through the archives you can find multiple threads where that steel/iron has deteriorated and the made the cabin top sag. This is not just a Typhoon issue but can affect any cabin-stepped model, including my CD28.
That said, I would still go with the the cabin-stepped Ty purely for the the ease of lowering & raising the mast alone (been there, done that many times). If you do encounter a sagging cabin top, you can also find in the archives threads/photos/etc of folks who have added a compression post inside their Ty cabins.
FWIW, I frequently wish I still had either one of my previous Typhoons...

Re: Typhoon or CD22?
Here I am!! So.... the Typhoon is 18ft and the CD22 is, of course, ~22ft sooooo... how come that the CD22 looks like 25x a Typhoon??? The CD22 is beautiful, no doubt, and this one is in excellent conditions... and is HUGE....just way way way waaaaaaay too big for me now!
I am 100% sure now, I go for a Typhoon!
The Typhoon that I saw this morning looked nice, definitely needs a lot of cosmetic work. A few concerns are:
1. They added a roller furling system for the jib and I noticed many cracks right at the base, with quite a bit of silicone
2. Quite a bit of silicone at the mast base as well
3. A lot of mold below, right under the bow, I think that water comes in from the bow ...
4. Couldn't see chain plates
What to do???!!??

Re: Typhoon or CD22?
My suggestion would be to RUN from that Ty... Silicon is the second worst thing to use on fiberglass... 5200 being the first.
If you really have decided a Typhoon is your best bet, be patient... they made a lot of them and you should be able to find one without those kinds of "patches"...
As for 'chain plates' - the Typhoon just has these mounted on the deck with a backing plate below.
Definitely check the bolts and backing plates. Heck, unless you know they have been replaced in the last 5~10 years you probably should replace them and re-bed (preferably with rubber butyl tape).

Re: Typhoon or CD22?
That silicone may just be an inexperienced owners way of "sealing" gel coat cracks. It may be good to further check those out.

Re: Typhoon or CD22?
I would be tempted to pass this Typhoon up and look for a better one, but it all depends on price. How much are they asking?
