Sheet sizes?

Post by bigmark »

I'm replacing some really tired lines on my Typhoon weekender that I purchased last fall. Can I get some suggestions as to diameters and favorite brands of jib, main and halyard lines? I have a feeling my boat was rigged with what ever was on hand by the last owner. Any one have opinions, suggestions or sources for spinnaker? I usually just pole out the jib but a spinnaker looks like so much fun!

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

I'd consider sewing up a Sailrite Spinnaker. I have done two sails with Sailrite and they are great, simple to do, if a bit of a project, and cheaper than new. The lighter fabric of a Spinnaker or asymmetrical cruising chute make sewing these up with a home machine very easy.

As for the sheets, I would check the Typhoon manual online for guidelines on length and diameter lines for sheets.

I like New England Ropes Stay Set or similar for sheets.

All the best,

To follow up on Paul D.'s recommendation, the Cape Dory Yacht Manual recommends the following for the Typhoon Weekender:

Main Halyard (P) 5/16x56'

Jib Halyard (P) 5/16x48'

Main Sheet (D) 5/16x40'

Jib Sheet (D) 5/16x32'

Genoa Sheet (D) 5/16x20’

Topping Lift (D) 1/4x45'

Spinnaker Halyard (D) 5/16x40'

Spinnaker Sheets (D) 5/16x30'

P = Prestretched Dacron

D = Braided Dacron

You may want to talk with a rigger or sail maker about current materials to replace Dacron (prestretched or braided). Chrissa006's reference to the Sailrite (New England Rope) website is also very good.

Congratulations on becoming a caretaker of a Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender. :!: :)
Fair winds,

Roberto
