Hi guys & gals,
I've seen a few Yanmar 2GM20Fs in Cape Dory 28s, and that is my current project. My old Volvo has been removed, and I built a template for the 2GM20F to determine how the engine beds would need to be modified. The template uses the actual motor mounts of my Yanmar.
It looks like in order for this to work, the motor mounts would have to be sunk into the hull, or the engine would have to be poking sitting out under the companionway ladder. Looking at a few pictures of Yanmar installations in CD28s, it looks like most are not using the factory motor mounts, but instead some low profile and shorter mounts (forward to aft dimension). Can anyone who has done this, or has a CD28 with the installation already done, give me a few pointers on how you made this work?
Thanks tons,
Joey

Re: Installing Yanmar 2GM20F in CD28 -- help!
Custom mount brackets can be fabricated out of steel tube or angle iron, I used an angle grinder with cutoff wheel to make the flywheel end brackets here. I believe it was 4 x 1/2" angle iron.
They moved the mount position 1" closer to the pulley end mounts.
Looking at the Yanmar, it looks a little more awkward to fab mounts, but it should be possible to make inverted hangars to nestle the engine closer to the stringers
The W shaped mounts look pretty tall too. More conventional mounts may drop it an inch or so.
Oil filter access will become problematic... Can you measure the height between the engine beds and propeller shaft?
Says it should be about an inch or two.
You could swap these left/right and grab two inches fairly easily. The mount may bang the corner of the bracket, depends on the dimensions.
Have you checked with Yanmar? Likely they have seen this twice this week already.

Thanks Buzzard,
I'll take a look at flipping the rear mount tabs to gain some room back there, that is a good idea, and I'm also looking at some DF-100 mounts, which are lower profile and shorter. I'll modify the template with these changes and see what that gets me.
I've got the 2GM20F parts catalog, and there are no alternate mounts or mounting tabs available. And if Yanmar did have them, they would probably cost half of what I paid for this engine. I'm not a fan of their distribution network and prices so far.
Anyone who has actually done this install have any info on what hoops they jumped through?
thanks in advance everyone,
Joey
