30 Percent Price Reduction on Spade Anchors

For the last two years I sailed with a Spade 80 (33 lb) anchor. Though expensive, it's a very impressive anchor and has performed exceptionally well for us. I have always felt it was on the cusp of being a little small for the Far Reach (about 18,500 lbs fully loaded). Since I have the bow sprit off the boat I decided to order a Spade 100 (44 lb).

I called Spade USA today and discussed anchors with the rep, Alex. Spade has lowered the price of its anchors in the US 30 percent to make them more cost competitive with Rocnas etc.

All the new designs appear to be excellent but I understand Spade anchors are just more expensive to manufacture. John Harris at AAC is a big fan of the spade and he will go on and on about why it is such a great anchor. I can't really attest to any of that other than to say a role bar anchor would not work for us with our bow sprit and the Spade has performed so well I am buying another one.

Two things I like about the spade is half the weight is in lead cast into the tip (which I understand is why they set so fast and dig in well across many bottom types) and they come apart and stow flat. The picture below is the Spade 80 on the Far Reach.

Anyway, the price reduction is a big plus.

My bower is a 33# Spade and I couldn't agree with John more. It sets immediately and holds tenaciously. My kedge is a 25# Mantus which I would also reccommend unreservedly.
