Driving me nuts.
I have a 1982 CD36. I come out every 6-8 weeks to work on her and take her out. Everytime i get here i have to pump out about 12gals of fresh water under the engine.
I've run a water hose all over the cockpit but can't find the intrusion point. My air intakes are covered so I don't think it's them. Has anyone else had this issue and what did you do to correct it?

Re: CD36 rainwater in engine sump
I had a similar problem and finally realized the source was two-fold.
1 - excessive dripping from my stuffing box
2 - leaking of rain water into the cockpit lazarette which then drains eventually into the engine sump
the latter being the more significant. Solution was re-bedding the teak raised edges inside the lazarette so that rain is channeled to the cockpit floor and down the scupper drains, as intentioned, rather than into the lazarette.

Thanks for the reply. I might just climb in there while it's raining and see what's going on.

Similar issues in my 1984 25D, but less water:
- also had leaking from the cockpit lockers where the teak trim needed to be recaulked. Did not remove the pieces, just pressed the caulk between the trim and glass. Found this source by putting paper towel pieces in various spots and tracing it back.
- collar around the tiller on the cockpit sole. Collar was screwed in with a bedding caulk. Over the years it loosened up ultimately leading to leaks down the shaft which then saturated the balsa core. Cockpit sole flexed quite a bit. Once core was saturated the rain water would flow down and end up in the sump and bilge. This was the first major job needed after purchasing the boat 4 years ago.
Hope this helps
