Spartan midship cleat

I'm looking at adding a mid-ship cleats to my cape dory 30K and I'm wondering if anyone has done this. If so what Spartan part number did you use? I'm trying to figure out if I should get the C212 or the C229. http://www.robinhoodmarinecenter.com/chocks-bronze/

I really appreciate all of the knowledge that this group of people has and is willing to share.

I would say that you should measure the toe rail that you have. I think the height would be the deciding factor.
The toe rail on Slainte, our 27, has been sanded quite a bit and it is no longer as tall as it was originally.

I and a friend installed these on Second Chance, my prior CD 27. We did this something like 15 years ago so I do not recall which model we installed. However I would suggest that it was probably the smaller one. I would suggest taking a caliper to the existing, sanded toe rail on your 30 and compare those measurements to all the the ones in the link provided, and decide which is the best fit. CD made much larger yachts, so I am guessing the larger chock was meant for the bigger boats. I do recall that due to sanding, the chock stood proud of the toe rail, but only about 1/8". I recall filing a smooth rounded profile where it protruded to avoid snagging and chafing. In the end it was a very helpful upgrade, providing a solid attachment point for spring lines, breast lines etc.

I had pondered doing this for a long time... but finally opted for these stainsteel cleats from Defender when I caught them on sale. Much less expensive and far easier to install! :D

I bought two of the C229 in burnished bronze for my CD 30. They have not been installed yet.

Two years ago I installed Spartan mid-ship cleats on my C25D. I'm pretty sure they were C212. As I remember the C212 was a little too tall, but the base was the right width. The C229 looked to be a little too wide at the base and a little too short. My toe rails don't look to be sanded a whole lot, the cleats are definitely proud on top, but I haven't had any problem with them catching lines. I think the width controlled my decision. I love the cleats, great for single handed landing on a dock and I use them to tie my tender alongside the cockpit bow and stern for loading. Here's a picture (pardon the spring fitting out mess)

Those look great Bob. We are planning a larger trip this year so I'm looking forward to having more options for dingy placement. I also have 2 younger kids so I basically am sailing solo so those would come in handy when docking.

Lisa, what controlled your decision when purchasing? was it height or width?

I and a friend added these on my CD27 several years ago. The existing toe rail was not tall enough so the cleat was "proud". So, we ended up cutting back the toe rail and adding an angled teak block that matched the height of the cleat and fit it to the toe rail. Next time I go over to my boat I'll try and take a picture and add it.

This is one of the best mods I've made, allows for spring lines, which is a big bonus when when coming into my slip solo and securing in the slip. Even when I have crew I just tell them to put the spring line on first which stops the boat then I just have to get the bow and stern lines.
