Spreader boots
As I recuperate from an unfortunate issue I am thinking of some small things I can do on S/V Bali Ha'i.
Today I noticed that the spreader boots are badly deteriorated. Since the mast is down I thought this might be a simple project.
Before buying I wanted to check with this board to see if there is any particular product that is recommended or if there is something on the market today that is better than plastic/rubber boots.
As is apparent, this inquiry is a "mission critical", priority one alert notification, requiring immediate responses. O/T is authorized
Thanks in advance.

Re: Spreader boots
Hey Roberto,
I have always used the rubber ones. There is nothing really great about them. It will be interesting to see if there are any better alternatives.

Re: Spreader boots
Roberto, sorry to hear about an unfortunate issue. i hope recovery goes well. Check out this previous thread about spreader boots: http://www.capedory.org/board/viewtopic ... der+wheels
I have had both and I much prefer the wheels. Of course your preference may vary, depending on whether or not you use a genoa, lock your prop, or have a tiller.

For a nod to the olden days, you might consider baggywrinkles...
Your good buddy Google has links for how to make them.

Re: Spreader boots
Many years ago I had a wooden boat, complete with rope standing rigging, dead eyes, and belaying pins, if you try to make baggywrinkles you MUST use manila line, polyester does not work.

Re: Spreader boots
This board is amazing
In less than 40 minutes, 3 posts plus a link to a prior post about spreaders (that I was too stupid to find on my own ).
As for locking my prop Timothy I believe that is an issue invading my personal space. I will acknowledge I have a tiller and am very happy with my tiller.
Thanks

Re: Spreader boots
So, admits to having a tiller, secretive about prop locking . . . hmmm! Which way do you coil your lines?

I think Roberto will come clean about lock or not lock his prop
Wondering who he is cheering on this Sunday?
Roberto was once a western Mass native now living down South.
My money he is still a Patriot fan.

I also use the rubber boots and replace them every few years only because they are not costly and my mast is on saw horses every year.
Besides the boots that are worn what does the seizing look like that keeps them in place?

Pete:
Sorry to disappoint. I moved to Miami in 1964/1965. My base of operations has been Miami for the past 50+ years with a bunch of TDYs elsewhere.
If I recall correctly, Patriots were then part of the old AFL. In my youth I was a Green Bay Packer fan. Miami Dolphins were born in 1966. My cousin and I bought season tixs for the first 3-4 yrs. Back then they were almost giving away tixs to fill the stands. I've been a "Dolfan" ever since.
Tomorrow I support Atlanta Falcons. They have earned it. My goddaughter is in love with the Patriots and Brady. Should be a fun time around the TV.
As for spreader boots, after reading the above posts and the earlier thread, I will probably buy the rubber ones similar to what I have now. They are worn badly but . . . . The boots are seized with what I think is rigger's tape but not sure. Tim, the plastic wheels seem a little "flimsy". I am also not sure how they would be permanently attached to the spreader.

Re: Spreader boots
No, they are quite sturdy and they are two overlapping pieces that simply lap and snap together. They are not attached to the spreader, they snap onto the shrouds above the spreaders where they are free to swivel. Some folks make there own out of wood.Sea Hunt Video wrote: . . . I must admit the Falcons looked mighty good.

Since Captain Jim opted to expand this thread a bit (well, somewhat more than a bit) to discuss the Pats, we are most embarrassed to admit that we turned off the game mid-3rd quarter to watch a cop show on Netflix.
Well, with decisions, you can't win 'em all.
But it seems the Pats can. Amazing.
