Typhoon Weekender jib size

Post by Bruce56 »

My dad purchased a Typhoon Weekender at the end of last season. We haven't had a chance to rig and sail the boat yet, but the jib is shot and I'm looking to buy a new one. We'd like to start off with a sail close to the original size, or perhaps a bit larger. From what I can see from YouTube videos, there isn't much clearance between the sheets and the lower shrouds, even with the stock jib (which I assume is 100%). How big can we go and still sheet inside of the shrouds using the tracks on the cabin roof?

We plan to installing a furler, but he's 80 and doesn't want to deal with a large foresail, so 130-150% genoas are not a consideration.

Hi Bruce- I don't think you can go any bigger and still use the cabintop leads, I agree I think the shrouds would get in the way. A small roller furling sail might be the way to go but you might consider using just a downhaul on a hanked on jib. This would allow you to lower the front sail without having to go on the foredeck. Another downhaul I would like to try is a Gerr Downhaul which folds the sail up a little nicer. If you wanted to go a little smaller, I always thought a self tending jib would work nicely on a Ty.

Bruce,
I have a Typhoon daysailor and was ordering a 100% jib six months ago when the sail designer from Hyde Sails informed me that a 100 would be be dicy using the cabintop fairleads. He recommended I reduce my order to a 90% jib. I did and it performs very well. Any larger jib that I order in the future will have to be sheeted to winches and cleats on the cockpit coaming boards.
Hope this helps.
