CD 25 hull number

Post by Dan H »

I am having difficulty determining the hull number of my CD25. The seller told me it is a 1977. I had a hard time reading the serial number on the transom. The last digits to the right seem to be 0425M7.
The boat yard has CPDC0405M77A on a service document, but their records are spotty and incomplete. Can anybody provide information on either hull # 405 or 425? Which number is most likely correct. Wasn't 1977 the year that serial numbers on the transom became a legal requirement. I wonder if in this case Cape Dory may have been less than accurate with the new regulation?

Dan,

I had a similar problem reading the plate on my CD14. Try taking a rubbing of the area, the hull ID may just pop out for you. I used a No. 2 pencil on its side and printer paper. I am sure there are better techniques, but this worked for me.

A bright light held at an oblique angle may also reveal a shadow of the original impression.

Good luck!

<B> I've seen CD25's with serial numbers on the transom in 1974 and 1973 boats, so I think it unlikely that Cape Dory wasn't used to the system in 1977. <B>

the link http://www.uscgboating.org/reg/reg_bsc70.asp will take you to a Coast Guard site which will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about Hull Identification Numbers.
