Re-rigging cutter on CD 30 - HELP, please.
My beautiful 1981 CD30 was built as a cutter. The last 2 owners have opted to sail her as a sloop. The deck has been re-surfaced so there are no remnants of the original bolt holes for the forward stays'l boom mount. I have the boom and some hardware ( not sure if I have all of it ). Are there any written details of the rigging of the stays'l?
What I primarily need is:
1. Exact placement of stays'l boom base. Also which is the forward end and which is aft end.
2. Mast detail for halyard. I suspect I will need to add hardware and halyard as I want to keep the spinnaker halyard.
3. Any other relevant info on rigging.
Thanks in advance for your help. I have tried looking at pics of other CD 30c and web searches but can not find detailed info or clear picture.

You might try printing page 90 of the 1981 owners manual. With a pair of dividers you should be able get 'close enough' measurements.

Try looking from the bottom up. I doubt the underside of the deck was that well finished.

I have a CD 31, not a 30, but without looking I'm pretty sure the staysail boom mounts on the bowsprit, not directly to the deck.
Also my guess is your spinnaker halyard goes to the top of the mast. The top of the stay for the staysail will be part way down the mast so I don't think you could use the spinnaker halyard, at least not at its current location.

Hi Lisa,
Attached (we hope) is a photo of a 30C with the staysail flying. Not that helpful for exact measurements. We believe the owner is Cheryl Allen and the boat is "Evergreen." If you contact her, she may be able to give you the exact mast locations of the blocks for the staysail halyard and the staysail boom topping lift, as well as the location of the tang for the stay. The jib boom also has a small block for the outhaul. You'll also need cleats on the mast and two blocks on the cabin forward of the mast for the sheet and maybe a stopper or cam cleat back under the dodger. Once it's all set up, the sail it pretty easy to handle and is sheeted from the cockpit.
Next year we may convert our staysail to roller furling to save some time and make us more inclined to use it. You might want to consider doing that now if your budget allows, but budgets are always an issue for new owners of old boats.
Good luck with your 30C! Can't wait to see her on the water next season.
And a very happy Thanksgiving to you.

Re: Re-rigging cutter on CD 30 - HELP, please.
Thanks everyone who has replied so far. I think the previous owner the has the manual, but I won't be able to pick that up and the rest of the stuff for a few weeks. There are no sign of holes from below
Jen and Terry how does the furler work on the stays'l? Does it have sail slug that ride on top of the boom or do you get rid of the boom all together? I am all for making her easy to sail single handed. Only draw back I can see is that hard if you wanted to use that stay for a storm sail. Of course who knows if I end up using her in a way that I would need one.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Re: Re-rigging cutter on CD 30 - HELP, please.
I would think that this could be easily figured out. The forestay and the staysail stay should be parallel, right? Run a line from the staysail halyard down to the deck and measure up as high as you can reach and down at the dec until both measurements match. That will be the location for the attachment at the deck.
Of course I am only a sloop guy, but that is what I would do. Good Luck.

Hi Lisa,
Since we're still in the dreaming stage of our roller furling planning, we can't answer your question about the specifics of attaching and sheeting a roller-furled staysail.
We did read the short Practical Sailor article (August 11, 2015) on the debate about furling staysails which noted that many cruisers who go off-shorelike the option of a hank-on storm jib, but many go offshore with all foresails roller furled, as the newer furlers are quite reliable. We own a good storm jib but we don't plan going offshore and would feel quite safe with a staysail that could be furled much smaller, if necessary. Granted the furled sail will sit higher on the stay than a storm jib, but not much.
Jenn and I both have health issues that lead us to minimize time on the foredeck while under sail. Furling both foresails would certainly help in that regard.
I'm sure there's some other CD cutter owners who have thought this one through more than we have. Hopefully, they'll chime in with more useful details.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Re: Re-rigging cutter on CD 30 - HELP, please.
Coincidentally, I am about to remove the inner forestay base and boom pivot hardware (or whatever this stuff is really called) from my old tub (CD30C) which we happily "sail" as a sloop. We are making room for a forward hot tub! Let me know if want measurements or anything. I can't see me bothering with the cutter rig.

Re: Re-rigging cutter on CD 30 - HELP, please.
Thanks to those who sent detailed pic's that is a huge help as below deck any holes had been finished over. next time you are at the boat if you have a tape measure it would be great to have an exact measurement in between the bowsprit and stay s'l boom mount.
Happy Holidays

Regarding: "2. Mast detail for halyard. I suspect I will need to add hardware and halyard as I want to keep the spinnaker halyard."
Normally, the spinnaker halyard is attached via a block to a bail mounted at the very top of the mast. I installed a Spinn. bail on my CD30C. The top of the inner forestay and staysail halyard attach roughly 3/4s up the the mast. I would be surprised if some or all that stuff isn't still there. At the verry least, the drilled holes for the fasteners should be.
Best of luck.

Next time I get to MOON DANCE maybe this weekend, brrrrrrrrr I'll take a pic of the measurement from the cabin top as I think this may help you as well.
