Advice for a CD 22 Rolling Furling and Head Sail
Advice for a CD 22 Rolling Furling and Head Sail
Looking for advice in regards to purchasing a rolling furling for my 1982 CD 22 and what head sail size sail is best for this boat. Thanks in advance!
Re: Advice for a CD 22 Rolling Furling and Head Sail
Hi pvesich
Harken makes a nice furler but it might be more $ than other brands. I guess it depends on your price point.
I had a new headsail built a few years ago and the sailmaker(Doyle) insisted on visiting the boat for measurements. Where the track is located and the bow pulpit and the furler were noted. The new sail was cut to fit the boat.
Some other members might be able to give you a reference if they know where you are located.
Good luck on your upgrades
Pete

Check out the CDI Flexible Furler. I've never had one but have seen them on smaller boats.
Much less expensive than Harken/Schaefer/etc.

When I decided to install a furler on S/V Bali Ha'i I asked around at the local sailing club, etc. Everyone seemed to recommend Schaefer and Harken as quality systems. I also talked with two professional riggers. Both said they would install Schaefer or Harken. Both said they would not touch a CDI furler. They claimed it was not sturdy, less quality, etc. Profurl also got high marks but I am not sure they make one to fit a CD 22.
At a local sailing school that has a small fleet of Harbor 20s that "race around the cans on Saturdays", the owner installed a CDI furler on each Harbor 20. Those rigs got a lot of abuse from sailors like me who had/have no idea what we were doing. They seemed to keep functioning.
I installed a Harken furler and have been very happy with it.

For 'smaller' sailboats, CDI has worked well, as obviously proven by tour sailing school. Some riggers probably shun them for lack of mark-up they can make... I would consider one on up to a CD25 but not a CD25D. My personal preference for a cruising furler is ProFurl, but that's probably a bit more robust than needed for a CD22.

Re: Advice for a CD 22 Rolling Furling and Head Sail
Appreciate everyone's advice. In regards to purchasing one of these rolling furlings, do you have suggestions on where I should look and is there a used market for rolling furlings? Lastly, if anyone has suggestions for size of a head sail (jib or genoa) for the CD 22, I would appreciate your thoughts. Take care, Paul
Re: Advice for a CD 22 Rolling Furling and Head Sail
I have a 130 Genoa with a CDI furler on my 22D. The 130 is a good headsail up to between 12-15 mph winds. Beyond that it should be partially furled. The CDI has worked well for me. An advantage of the CDI over other furlers is that it does not require a halyard down the mast. It has its own halyard that is internal to the furler.

Re: Advice for a CD 22 Rolling Furling and Head Sail
I've had CDI, ProFurl and Furlex units on 3 different boats.
First, the CDI unit is quite simple, hence bulletproof. The CDI unit WITH the ball bearing upgrade is a must. As others have said, riggers are in business to take/make money and I doubt they can with a CDI. It does have internal halyard but the halyard can stretch, and it's a bit of a pain to get proper luff tension v traditional units. I found other u it's easier to furl when under pressure. But it does the job at a very good price.
Harken/Schaefer/ProFurl are great, if you have the budget go for it, having a dual slotted foil can be handy when changing sails, you get proper tension easily and they furl effortlessly. If money is short, go with the CDI. They sell direct and thru some resellers.
Note that if you buy headsail and furler from a sailmaker you can sometimes get a deal, get some quotes now as these guys are not busy, but will get busy starting in December/January.
Any recommendation is useless until you tell us:
1) where you sail
2) general conditions in which you sail (wind and sea state)
3) cruising or daysailing
4) single-handed or crew
I sail in long island sound single-handed. Normally when it's 8-15.
Re size, my CD22 has a 140ish Genny. I think it's too much headsail, more headsail on the 22 is just going to exacerbate the weather helm me thinks, and as you know the 22 has too much weather helm once the wind pipes up. So maybe a 130, or even 120 might be the best.
I have a 100 sitting around that I may try to get converted to PDF my thinking is that, a 100 hi aspect cut might work well!

Re: Advice for a CD 22 Rolling Furling and Head Sail
I put a cdi furler on my cd22 and used it for about 4yrs....while cdi isn't a heavy duty furler it worked fine for me on my inland lake....I had a north 150 with foam for better form and sunbrella for protection on the headsail...The headsail was really heavy and had issues when tacking in light air...If I were to do that again I probably go with a 130 and no protection and order a sleve to cover when not in use....The cdi is fine....for lighter use....I think it's about $550 and order the bearing upgrade...

Re: Advice for a CD 22 Rolling Furling and Head Sail
I installed a CDI roller furler on my Typhoon after sailing it for a year with hanked-on sails. I have never been more pleased than with this furler. You can tighten the luff by tightening the tie-down at the tack. Sure - it is not for racers but I didn't buy the TYPHOON TO RACE! I bought it from Rigging Only and it has worked fine for the past 9 years.
