1.I am currently making plans to remove acumulated layers of bottom paint from my 1974 typhoon, which I purchased last march. Hull in great shape, but I think it is weighted down with too much old paint and now is the time to do it. Any suggestion on removal and preparation for recoating.
2. My typhoon rides on a mooring bouy in the Saknonnet River in Rhode
Island, season roughly mid-Apr. to mid-Nov. Experienced what I thought was a build-up of sea weed, slime and mussels, that was excessive. Any suggestions and has any one had any experience with INTERLUX ULTRA
or MICRON EXTRA (both with Biolux)
3. BOTTOM PAINT colors? All articles I have read or pix that I have seen show typhoons with a BLUE bottom paint and RED water line. As a retired Navy type I much prefer a RED undercoat. Any big problem with
breaking with tradition ( and the C/D owner's manual) and going with
preference?
4. Last, but not least where can one locate C/D (not CCDOA) ball caps, burgees, etc and prices

TYPHOON BOTTOM PAINT?? TRADITION OR PREFERENCE

I originally used a chemical stripper on the bottom as the previous owner had applied a blue, non-antifouling paint to the bottom probably intended for topside application. I have red boot stripe. If you paint the bottom red, you will probably want a contrasting color, perhaps blue, for the boot stripe.

Re: TYPHOON BOTTOM PAINT?? TRADITION OR PREFERENCE
1. I have a '74 Typhoon that I keep in Falmouth, Maine. Have used inexpensive bottom paint (basic West Marine) with success in the shorter sailing season and colder water off Maine. Let me know how your stripping project goes, as I'm considering the same.
2. I have never been able to find C/D gear, as opposed to CCDOA gear.
3. No problem breaking tradition if you don't mind breaking tradition, often a risky proposition in boats, as you know! My experience is that - like cars - Cape Dory's in as close to original condition as possible do a better job retaining their value.
Good luck!

Re: TYPHOON BOTTOM PAINT?? TRADITION OR PREFERENCE
My '74 Ty had a layer-a-year buildup of cheap bottom paint, and had spent some time on the hard before I stripped the bottom of the 19 layers of paint. After a light sanding to open up the old paint surface I used Peal-Away (the one gallon size) and it removed about 12 layers of paint. To get the paint off completely would have taken another gallon. I highly recommend the Peal-Away process. Little mess, better for your health and your back will thank you.
There have been several postings on the Cruising World board about using the Peal-Away sold in regular paint stores (not the marine version) and I have not seen anything that would prevent me from using the less expensive stuff next time.

Re: TYPHOON BOTTOM PAINT?? TRADITION OR PREFERENCE
By all means go with a multiseason paint so you don't have to repaint every year; Interlux has excellent quality paints and they also have excellent customer service that can help you choose the right paint. If you are far north, you may not need the added expense of a biocide additive for slime. My boat is on the Chesapeake, so a biocide is a necessity. Also, the advantage of a multiseason paint is that I don't have to have the yard pull the boat every winter for repainting.
I AM changing my bottom paint color this season to black. Black with a red stripe looks quite good and, with a multiseason paint, it has the advantage of easy detection of areas here the bottom paint has worn away (in these areas the original blue will show thru).
