applying clear polyeurathane over the Cetol on my next refinishing project. Has any one had experience with this .Will you get more depth in the finish, longevity?or is it not worth the extra work. That time of year is comming!!

I have used both and prefer the satin. It is not as bright, the orange tint is more quiet I didn't see any change in the way it held up.Lyle Lunson wrote: Was wondering if anyone had any good advice for the proper application of Cetol gloss vs satin etc

I would do some careful research before applying polyurethane over Cetol.I have yet to see a urethane that performs worth a darn in an exterior situation.Inside it's ok and you can get a finish with nice depth by using a few coats of gloss followed by 2 coats of satin.I don't know if the same is true with Cetol, try it.My guess is it would not be a compatable arrangement to coat cetol with poly.Tom wrote:I have followd the instructions on the container, usually applying 3 coats and have been quite happy with the results.I am looking intoLyle Lunson wrote: Was wondering if anyone had any good advice for the proper application of Cetol gloss vs satin etc

Gloss is only intended as a top-coat!
If you read the can, and do the research [Practical Sailor], you will see that Sikkens is very clear [no pun intended] that the gloss is a top-coat ONLY. It is not formulated to use on bare wood, but designed to add a glossy look to Cetol or Cetol Lite. Recommended is a good number of base coats and minimum 3 of gloss. We did 3-4 base coats of lite and 3 of gloss. It doesn't hold a candle to varnish.Lyle Lunson wrote: Was wondering if anyone had any good advice for the proper application of Cetol gloss vs satin etc
