Cd 25D chain locker
Hi. Have recently purchased a 1982 25D and I am curious about the bow configuration. There is an anchor locker on foredeck with solid bottom. There is an inaccessible space below the anchor locker and fwd of the hanging lockers.
Is this as per the original design? The bottom of the anchor locker is bare plywood fibreglassed in to place and the workmanship does not look right.
What I am considering is putting a hawse pipe from the anchor locker and an access hatch from the hanging locker to make this space a chain locker. It will have to drain to the bilge.
Any thoughts?
Thanks, Martin

Yes that is the original design. Now that is not to say that someone hasn't modified the shelf. If the drain hole is exposed and the retaining ring is in place at the aft port side then things sound pretty much normal.

Opps just read all of your comments. Yes pretty hasty reply. And posted on a Friday afternoon. Its the weekend. The $40 you mention has very little to do with this board. That $40 is for annual membership in the Cape Dory Sailboat Owners Association AND Having said that it would be the best $40 you ever spent on your new to you boat.

I shall Bill's thoughts. I have a 1982 CD25D (#0069). The PO installed a teak grate to allow water to drain from anchors and chain, etc. and allow some circulation. I have two anchors stored there. Each as 20'-25' chain plus substantial rode.
I am not sure of the benefit of your suggestion. I would think it difficult to get drainage into the bilge without ripping out a lot of flooring, etc.
As for replies to posts, it sometimes takes a few days, especially on weekends, holidays, etc. Patience. We are a small family of CD owners but we are a tight group and help is always just a mouse click away.

Hi Martin
Since you are new to the board you might not know about the archives.
You might try there for some info.
Also in your spare time you might want to scroll back on past questions and you will find lots of info about the 25d's

Martin,
Why would you do so? There seems to be no benefit to it. It would needlessly permit mud and debris into the bilge.

Re: Cd 25D chain locker
Thank you for the replies. In these days of instant communication I was just impatient, apologies.
My anchor locker has no means of securing the bitter end, easily fixed with a padeye on the aft bulkhead. The bottom of the anchor locker is bare plywood which I will dry out and glass over in the spring.
It seems strange to have a void space in the forepeak with no ventilation. If there is any damp in there how would you know? I cant see it providing much reserve buoyancy so I dont understand the design philosophy behind it, any ideas anyone as to why this inaccesible void space is there?
The reason I thought of making it a chain locker is to lower the weight of the chain. I am increasing the chain from 30' to 100', the boat has a tendency to hobby horse in a short chop and the additional weight will make this worse, I think maybe if the cg is a little lower and further aft it might improve the situation.
If it drains to the bilge it will introduce a little mud, this will mix with the toothpaste from the forward washbasin which also drains there. Both to be avoided. I will try first with the new chain in the existing anchor locker and see how that goes, maybe an extra 50lbs wont make that much difference.
I like the grating idea, thank you. I will go and sharpen some tools. I have some leftover oak which will do nicely after a week in an oil bath.
Again apologies for the impatience. If anyone knows why this void space was designed in I would love to know.

Martin,
I don't have a 25D but I wanted to welcome you to the CD Board. One of the most cordial, good-humored and helpful groups anywhere. I value my CDSOA membership as well. Note that anyone who posts can go back and edit their own posts if they later decide to do so.

Re: Cd 25D chain locker
Thank you Bill, good to know and well noted.
I am still curious as to why this enclosed void space exists, nobody seems to know. Its too small to provide any meaningful reserve stability and unless it is foam filled it should be ventilated once a year at least.
Maybe it is foam filled, does anyone know?
I would like to be able to add another 70' of 1/4" anchor chain without exacerbating the hobby horse pitching. There are many opinions on the subject of ground tackle but personally I would not sleep well on 30' of chain, prefer 100' minimum.

Re: Cd 25D chain locker
Martin, welcome aboard. I had CD25D #2. Great little boat!
I reviewed your last post and I wanted to get back to you.
May sure you use an AMPLE backing plate for the pad eye in the anchor locker! The bare plywood in the anchor locker is perplexing. Mine was fiberglassed (I think).
I do not think that lowering your anchor chain is going to have a significant effect on the hobby horsing. It is only a 25 boat (in a short chop as you mentioned).
My anchor well drained out the bow.
And, just how much toothpaste do you use for a mix of water and toothpaste to be a problem in your bilge? You must have very clean teeth.
Again, welcome aboard!

Re: Cd 25D chain locker
Thanks Bob
The plywood bottom in the anchor locker makes me suspect that it is a repair and the standard of workmanship does not look right. In the spring I will dry it out and glass it over. I suspect that it is an amateur repair and the oem structure was damaged somehow. There was an excellent suggestion to fit a wooden grate to help it dry out in future.
I am still so curious about the function and form of the void space that I may just have to drill a hole before I glass the plywood to see whats in there. Who knows, it might be full of waterlogged foam!
The head sink is definitely a strange one. The Choff is under strict instructions to clean her teeth in the galley sink which drains overboard. I cant have a dirty bilge, old habits die hard.

Re: Cd 25D chain locker
Greetings Martin,
I can't answer your question about that void in the forepeak. Perhaps it was to add strength to the bow (just a wild guess).
My chain locker has served me well, but most anchorages here on the south coast of New England are relatively shallow.
The 25D is a great little boat, sometimes called the "East Coast Flicka." At least one that we know of has made it from San Diego to Australia, while another was sailed from the Northeast to Northern Ireland. You've got a great boat.
And, of course, welcome to the Cape Dory Board.
Best,
Joe Myerson
