Seeking help valuing/buying CD30
We are just buying our first boat and are attracted to the energy of a CD30. Feeling very vulnerable since it is our first time. Trying to ascertain the value of a 1984 cutter. Assume reasonable - good condition. Very few extras. No roller furling. Doesn't $47-48,000 sound too high? Any help that we could get to our email address would be greatly appreciated. Also anything specific we should look for, or be careful about, or ask? Anyone have a sound CD30 to sell on the NE Coast?
Thanks much,
Michael and Rivka

Look it up in BUCvalu.com
The BUCbook is the authority on boat values. To save you time I looked it up for you. The BUC book says a 1984 in average condition in the North Atlantic region is worth $ 32,950. low retail to $36,500 high retail. The price you quote sounds high unless she's in exceptional condition.Michael Soloway wrote: We are just buying our first boat and are attracted to the energy of a CD30. Re: Seeking help valuing/buying CD30
With a 1984 CD30 that has little in the way of upgrades, 47-48k is way-way too much..although the seller may be assuming that there will be bargaining going on, so maybe they left room for that. As Tom says, the BUC book is a guide..I would add...known to be priced pessimisticly, at least here in the midwest. But it is a starting point in considering the price. My 1983 CD30 was being offered for 51k when I bought it 11 years ago, but was able to negotiate it down to 41k. The equipment was basic, and original, but working. Today, with all the upgrades we have added, we would price her for $42k, but not less (unless circumstances warranted a lower price, of course). (But she is not for sale)
I suspect that your boat will fall in the $37-39k range after negotiations are completed.
What I would do is list the equipment that you would consider necessary to have before you would sail her. Add in any repairs or modifications that you will also need to make. Subtract this total from his asking price, and then some. That will be the fair price point for you.
Good Luck..it's a fantastic boat, with adequate room, and a sailing personality that is wonderful. I have had the opportunity and cash to move up to a CD330, or even a 36, but have chosen to remain with the 30 due to our ties to her, and the relationship we have developed (and in case there is anyone who doubts that an inanimate object such as this can have a personality, I suggest that you not say this too loudly in front of your own boats..you could be sorry! ;^)) )
Cheers!

That price does sound very high. Try looking at Yachtworld.com they list several CD30's. I agree with Larry this is a fantastic boat, you will love it.Good luck.

no two ways around it, the cape dory is a great boat, but $47-48k sounds a little steep. my boat (1980, roller furling, autohelm, and a ton of original gear that i gotta replace) was about $20,000 less. of course, every boat's different...
One word of advice though. if you are serious about this (or indeed any) boat, get a surveyor. not only will he or she determine the fundamental seaworthiness of the boat, the surveyor can also give you a rough idea of the outlays necessary to get her truly shipshape, which will give you some bargaining power. also, many surveyors give an appraised value, which is likely to be a good, objective valuation.
I suppose in the end, the actual dollar figure isn't as important as whether or not you're happy with your boat.
good luck!

Re: Seeking help valuing/buying CD30
Michael,
I have a 1984 30' Cutter that I bought in April, 1999. It was in very good shape, had no real "extras", but did have roller furling. I have since had to replace all three sails (for approximately $3,750). I paid $30,450 which I believe was a very good price despite the condition of the sails. I agree with the others. The price you're quoting does seem rather stiff.
They're great boats though. Good luck,
Gary

Thanks much,
I shopped extensively last fall before purchasing my 1982 CD27. There was a very clean 1985 CD30 cutter, loaded with equipment, and not a lot of use, for sale on Cape Cod, in Falmouth. The owner said he would sell her for $38,000 without a broker or would give her to a broker for $43,000. This boat was in beautiful condition with a recent survey and I suspect could be bought for around 36,000. It was in Soundings a few months ago....don't know the status now. Great boat, but there's lots of them around, so shop as much as you can, and good luck!

Dayspring, a 1979 CD30 hull # 107 came out to NZ and sold here for US$25K. ( at 0.50 exchange at the time ).
She had new main and staysails, Monitor Windgear, 4 man liferaft,VHF, GPS, Radar, autohelm 3000, and lots of cruising gear. We think that
was a good price for the local market for such a good boat and with
so much equipment. She has required some work, but it has been mainly
cosmetic. Excellent boats, we agree. I wonder how much we would fetch
for her if she was sailed back to the US ??
