Typhoon Portlight Replacement

This past week I replaced the original plastic portlights with the bronze replacement versions from Bristol Bronze. The Bristol Bronze portlights were a perfect fit. Only had a little trouble getting one of the twelve screws started.

The stock screws were very short, a half inch. The portlights came out easily with a little prying from a putty knife. Got most of the putty / caulk off with the putty knife then the rest cleaned up with caulk remover. (Can't remember the brand, but it claims to remove 3m 5200). Cleaned up the center of the opening with a Scotchbrite pad.

I deepened the pilot holes with a 7/64 bit as I was using #10 3/4" screws (1/4 is taken up by the outer rim of the Portlight so 1/2" screws into the fiberglass)

Used butyl tape attached directly to the new port light. Started two screws top and bottom to line up the light. The butyl really sticks so getting the top and bottom screws into the existing holes is a big help in getting the rest of the screws started. Installed the other four and gradually tightened them all down each a little at a time. Cleaned up the excess butyl that squeezed out with a plastic putty knife.

A big improvement over the plastic lights.

I just called Bristol Bronze and asked for the Typhoon port lights. Didn't have a part number.

Thank you for that informative post. What type of glass did you use? And does that Bristol Bronze product have a piece that finishes off the interior?

The ports come with glass installed. I don't know what type. Probably 1/4" thick. Bristol does not sell a finish ring for the interior. I thought about making one out of teak or star board but have night as of yet. I'm not in the Cuddy much.

Come to thinks of it you might be able to take the glass out of the old port lights and turn it into a trim rim from the inside.
