CD25 upgrades and outfitting, what has everyone else done?

Post by Douglas McMullin »

I am in the middle of a significant round of improvements on my CD25.
I would be interested in hearing what kind of changes others have made. I would also like to hear how other 25's are outfitted.

My current projects include stripping and fairing the bottom, replacing the through hulls and upgrading all of the fittings to proper seacocks (or at least ball valves in some cases), replacing all of the plumbing, and installing a battery switch and new master pannel.

What changes have people made to the rig? Does anyone else out there cruise these little boats extensively? What do you use for sails, ground tackle, etc...

Chime in, I would like to hear whats going on from other CD25 owners.

Margaret and I are in the last third of a major rebuild of our 1975 CD25. In addition to the items you mentioned we have replaced the tracks for the cabin drop boards with stronger tracks made from black locust and thru bolted them to the hull. Ditto for the motor well setup. Any panel that had cracks due to flexing has been reinforced. (Seats, locker lids, sea hood, sliding hatch, motor well cover) All thru bolts are being backed-up. We started to replace all the old aluminum port holes with new bronze units from NFM this last week. This is taking quite a bit of time because of the extensive work required to change the hull opening size.
One thing you might want to check; We trailered our boat home to western PA last Oct. from Chicago. During a stop in Indiana to check on things, we found that the sea hood had blown off the cabin top but very fortunately it had become emeshed in the spiderweb of ropes we had in place to hold the mast etc. in place. We were very lucky that it did not blow clear and hit a pasing car. We were also very lucky that it did not wait to blow of during a bad storm and possibly sink the boat. Inspection showed that the hood was held in place, on our boat, by calking, which dried out and short stainless screws, which had pulled loose. We have re-enforced the hood and changed the mounting method to install thru bolts.
The inside panels and shelves have been removed and veneered with cherry and varnished.
We have purchased a 35# CQR and currently have it tied to the bow waiting for inspiration as to the best way to fabricate an anchor mounting and roller set-up, as well as a way to add storage for the rode. (I keep going back to Dana's webpages for ideas!)
We have a lot of new Harken hardware to mount after the boat is painted.
And so on.
Even though we will have a lot of time and funds invested in the CD25, we believe it will be better for our purposes than any of the newer, less seaworthy boats we looked at.

Doug,
Please see my note to you regarding the bulkheads. In addition I have rebedded all deck fittings, installed a new Johnson 9.9 Sailmaster, replaced all but two of the through hulls, installed a larger hawse pipe to enable me to store my anchor rode and chain in the well.

I also have not come up with a proper storage method for my cqr 25 with 200' of nylon and 30 ' of chain. What I did do was insert a piece of galvinized threaded rod between what used to be the strap hangers for my danforth on the bow pulpit. I installed a bow roller(one of the black rubber types) on the threaded rod and used washers and a double set of nuts on each end to hold it in the hangers. This has worked pretty well but is by no means optimum. It is important to make sure the rubber rollers turns freely or you will unscrew the rod each time.

I am in the middle of a significant round of improvements on my CD25.
