Maine - slip or mooring for Cape Dory 30

Other messages on this board have always been effective...so here goes....

I am planning to take our Cape Dory 30 to Maine for the 2001 season and am having no luck finding a slip (preferred) or mooring for her. I will be working and living in Portsmouth NH where slips and moorings have 10 year waiting lists.

Any leads would be appreciated.

What part of Maine are you looking at? We keep our CD26 in Falmouth, just outside of Portland. If you are looking along the coastline around Casco Bay, we can keep our eyes and ears open. As long as you are early enough, you should be able to find something.

It's a bit of a drive (2 hours or more, I'd guess) from Portsmouth, but you might consider getting a mooring at the Rockland Harbor Boatyard in Rockland, ME. (As far as I know, they wouldn't have any slips for rent.)

Last summer was our first experience with (a) a serious sailboat (our Cape Dory 25D) and (b) Maine sailing, and we found the folks at RHBY to be both low key and very helpful. Rockland is a down-to-earth town, and Rockland Harbor provides good access to Penobscot Bay. (It is a 3.5 hour drive for us.)

Try Great Island Boat Yard in Harpswell. 207-729-1639. I heard that they were putting in 10 additional moorings. They are in Quohog Bay on the Casco Bay chart. It is a very protected area, but with easy access to Casco Bay and points east. They are 6 miles south on rt 24 from Brunswick ME. It takes us less than 3 hours from Dedham MA. They are only 45 minutes from Portland ME.

Try Handy Boat located in Falmouth,ME, Jay Hallet at(207) 781-5110. They sell moorings, at least they did last year. Nice area easy access from Portsmouth via 95 north approx driving time 1-1/2 hours if you leave by 3PM on Fridays. Great restaurant and expensive clothing store and sail loft.
