Seeking input from CD25D owners
Hello forum users,
I am currently the proud owner of a CD25. This Friday we get a look at a possible upgrade ... the 25D right here in our hometown of Long Island.
I have researched the differences between the two hulls, power plant, headroom, etc, but would like to hear from a current owner as to sailing ability.
The 25D has a taller Stick than my 25 and am hoping to find some additional power under sail with the taller rig.
When we take our first walk through, is there anything specific I might want to look for?
Thanks in advance for feedback/comments:

Re: Seeking input from CD25D owners
Hi Adam,
I do not see the move from a 25 to the 25D as one inspired by sailing ability. It is about the increased cabin size. You can stand up in the 25D if you are not too tall. The head is quite roomy and far superior to the porta potty in the 25. It did not seem to me that the D was really much better under sail. Given it's larger cabin volume it was a little more cork like. The 25 is a pretty good under sail for a full keel boat. If you are going to be spending a lot of time on the boat and sleeping on it there is no contest, the D is much nicer. If you mostly day sail there is not that great of an advantage. The diesel is nice and seems to power the boat better than the 6 hp on the 25. The diesel is also more efficient. If my memory is accurate the outboard got about two hours to the gallon, the diesel gets better than three. The outboard can be replaced in half an hour with two thousand bucks or less. The diesel would be a much bigger expense and job.
As far as what to look for, condition is almost everything in thirty year old boats.
Sorry this response is not more about the sailing qualities but that is not the reason to switch from the 25 to the 25D in my opinion. Hope this helps.

Wondering why we are all not out sailing now?

Give me a private message and possibly your phone number and I'll be glad to give you quite a bit information between the 25 and the 25D Randy
Re: Seeking input from CD25D owners
If you're looking for more sailing performance as well as "space" I would recommend you look at a CD28.Keyscaptainadam wrote:Hello forum users,

I have owned 2 CD25s, sailed with a good friend on his CD25D and now own a CD28 (again...).
The CD28 is very easy to single-hand and also spacious enough guests. How many guests depends on how many are able to assist with jib sheets. My wife and I have taken out as many as 5 other couples... I stood in the stern helming and she handled the jib sheets, with folks every where on KAYLA. Most had never sailed before and were thrilled. Fortunately the wind gods were very kind that afternoon and it was a great sail!

Follow up on the CD25D vs CD25
Great input from all the forum users that responded. Much thanks to all.
Kaitlyn and I visited the boat last Thursday and are very much a fan of the headroom and dedicated head fwd. Cabin space is quite astounding as well.
We are going to stay with our daysailer another year or two before making the move to a "Bigger" boat.

Re: Seeking input from CD25D owners
I have a Cape Dory 27, which I listed for sale on this message board a few days ago. The boat is presently in Rhode Island, not all that far from Long Island (and frequently confused with Long Island by those who live outside of New England).
When I purchased this boat, I looked at and sailed a number of Cape Dory 25's, 25-D's, and 27's. The head room in the CD27 is 5 ft, 10 in. In my opinion, it is a better sailer and a more handsome boat than the 25-D. Many have said that the CD-27 is the best sailer and the best looking boat of the Cape Dory line. I have also crewed on CD-28's and CD-30's. Unless you are over 6 ft tall, the 27 has plenty of headroom, a separate v-berth with two bunks (good for privacy or for children), plus berths for two in the main cabin. It sails like a dream. Easily single handed, and so well balanced that you can walk away from the tiller. I found the 27 to have a more sea-kindly ride than the 25-D. The cabin in the 27 seems both more versatile and more safely laid out than the 25D, and since there is less freeboard above the waterline, the wind doesn't push the boat off course as easily. It can sleep 4, has oodles of storage, and is extremely fuel efficient.
I am asking $10,000 but will consider any reasonable offer. If you'd like to see her, just to get a feel for what she looks like, even if you decide not to change boats at this time, and are willing to drive up to Providence for a look, I'd be happy to show you to her. Just send me an email or a private message. She is presently on land, about 100 yards from Narragansett Bay, about 6 miles south of Providence.

While we do own a 27 (which I love), in MY opinion, no other Cape Dory can match the beautiful sheer of the 25D.

As I said, I love my 27! We could have bought a 28 for the same price from the same yard, but the 27 won our hearts, but I still admire the sheer of the 25D.

Re: Seeking input from CD25D owners
As a totally impartial observer on this thread allow me to make a few observations.
First, and most important Timothy (or "Tim" as his friends call him) is a quiet, thoughtful, considerate individual with an highly trained and discriminating eye for the beauty of a sailboat. ALL on this board know this to be true about Tim. His observations about the Cape Dory 25D are, in my objective and unbiased opinion, fully supported by the facts and line drawings prepared by Mr. Alberg.
Second, my good friend "Barfwinkle" (his friends just call him "Barf" ) who happens to own a Cape Dory 25D has been known to "exaggerate" every now and then. His "Queen of the line" post above may well be the result of a "small exaggeration".
Third, many good men and women have commented on the beauty and lines of the Cape Dory 27 including no less a luminaire than John Vigor who cared for a Cape Dory 27 for several years. There is no doubt as to the beauty of the Cape Dory 27. However, as mentioned by "Tim", when compared to the Cape Dory 27 the sheer of the Cape Dory 25D is beyond beautiful.
Fourth, either the CD 27 or the CD 25D is a beauty and will turn heads at any marina.
On an unrelated sad note, I spent 2 hours today trying to work on one of the engine compartment seacocks. I managed to cut two knuckles, almost lapse in heat stroke, and yet not move a single nut a single turn. We have a storm of as yet undetermined strength heading for my home this weekend. Life is good

A "nice sheer" is all well and good, but not worth having excessive free-board in the balance, in my ever so humble opinion...
