Replacing gate valvels on TY
Any specific recommendations for replacing gate valves with seacocks on a Typhoon Weekender (1980)? I would appreciate any information on a good seacock, size, replacement hoses, size etc. Has anyone had a problem with his/her gatevalves, or has replacement been made because it appears to be the recommendation? (I don't necessarily have a problem with my current valves.)
Thanks

Craig;
I also own a 1980 Typhoon and just recently replaced both gate valves with seacocks. I used bronze seacoaks and also replaced the hoses at that time. My gate valves were also working fine at the time: BUT... imagine a broken hose below the waterline, lotsa water coming in. Would you rather turn a seacock 1/4 turn to close or sit cranking down on the gate valve until it finally closes?
I used the same size valve when I made the replacement and used brass/bronze hardware, not plastic. Much more durable.

Re: Replacing gate valvels on TY
I have a Seasprite 23 which has very little room to mount seacocks. I have been looking closely at Blake seacocks. They are a one piece seacock which has the tail piece for the hose and the thru hull fitting all combined into one. It does require you to mount it with four bolts through the hull. On the outside of the hull it uses a circular bronze plate through which the bolts go. It is a tapered barrel seacock and not a ball valve. It is a British product and is supposed to be highly rated. Defender Industries is the U.S. distributor.

What about a 1970?
I was actually wondering about my boat as well. Unless I'm missing something, I don't think I have any sort of valve on mine at all. It seems to be a radiator hose sealed with worm-drive clamps. Is this how the older boats were made? It did occur to me that if I had a problem with the hoses, I'd be in some serious trouble. I'd like to know what, if anything, the owners of the older Typhoons have done about it.
As always, thanks,

Good looking reciepe, except that I have one question. When reading the West Marine Advisor, they state that the bronze ball valve should not be used below the water line, and instead use the bronze "seacock". Is this really an issue and have you had any concerns using the ball valve (seems to me to be a simpler process and make more sense to use the ball valve)?

CRAIG,
SORRY BUT MY KEYBOARD PACKED IT UP SO I HAVE TO USE CAPS. I REPLACED THE GATE VALVES ON MY '76 TYPHOON WITH APOLLO BALL VALVES, A MOST SATISFACTORY OPTION AND INEXPENSIVE. I RECEIVED EXCELLENT HELP FROM THIS SITE. THE BASIC PARTS ARE ALL AVAILABLE AT A PLUMBING SHOP OR WEST MARINE. SAVE THE OLD BRONZE THROUGH HULLS ADD A 3/4 BRONZE APOLLO BALL VALVE, 45 DEGREE ANGLE, ADAPTER TO HOSE FITTING AND PROPER HOSE TO MAKE A NICE CURVE TO THE COCKPIT DRAINS. NOW I CAN DRAIN PINE NEEDLES AND A FLICK OF THE WRIST SHUTS THEM OFF FOR WHEN I HAVE MORE THAN FOUR FOLKS ABOARD. IT ALL FITS RATHER NICE BUT YOU HAVE TOPLAY WITH IT A BIT. I USED 3M 5200 TO BED THE THROUGH HULLS. SOME SAY WHOA BUT I SAY I DON'T WANT THE BUGGERS LOOSENING UP. THEY WON'T. GOOD LUCK. EMAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. ALSO DO A SEARCH UNDER TYPHOON ON THIS SITE TO SEE IF YOU CAN GET THE PART NUMBERS.
ALL THE BEST,

Craig,
A seacock would be prefereable if you can find one that fits.
