We wish to build a trailer for our newly acquired CD26 and we wonder where we might find the fore & aft weight balance point. I want to have about a 500 lb tongue weight on the trailer and need to know this in order to know where to place the boat relative to the axles... Sure would appreciate any leads as to how I might learn this.
Thanks, Bert (and Jan) in Michigan

Re: How determine the fore & aft weight balance point of a C
You are getting into the field of higher math trying to figure that out and I am not that good at math. On our 27 (and most smaller CDs) the balance point is very close to the turn of the keel. if you walk forward on deck the boat would tip down if not otherwise supported. Don't ask how we know. So take the weight of a 26 divide by the 500# that you want on the tongue and devide the length by that number. On a 27 that would be 7000#/500=14; then divide the length by that number, 27'/14= 1'-11". My GUESS is that if you pick a point 1'-11" aft of the center of the length that would be CLOSE. It is more complicated than that, of course, because of weight distribution, added weight (gear, batteries, etc.) and where you position the mast on the boat/trailer while it is down.
I am anxious to see what some more learned members might add.

On my CD25 the axles were just behind the knee of the keel. Just like Bert said.
You might consider a weight distributing hitch. It made a huge difference for me, towing with a Tahoe.

Re: How determine the fore & aft weight balance point of a C
I have a "Triad" tandem axle trailer specifically designed for a CD25.
The distance from the center of the 2 axles to the center of the ball receiver is 17' 10"
The bottom flat portion of my keel is 6'8" long.
The keel bed rest channel is 7'4"
The distance from the aft keel flat to the center of the 2 axles is 4'4"
Now there is a vertical post in the front of the trailer that acts as a bow stop.
From the point of my bow to the center of the ball receiver is 47&1/2"
The bow stop on the vertical is 10&1/2" down from the top of the bow plate.
The bow stop has an adjustable range of 15&1/2"
I would start by making the 1st. dimension above 6" longer and adjust the remainder accordingly.
Final refinement can be made with your bow stop adjustment.
Hope this helps.
