I think it would be interesting to tap the wealth of knowledge on this board and do a bit of marketing study. What is a typhoon really worth? Assuming that you are the buyer, not the seller, and you are looking at three different typhoons. What are they worth. Typhoon "A" is rough. Missing trailer, motor or other primary pieces of equipment and has significant trim or delamination problems. Typhoon "B" is basically a good boat with all of the requisite equipment but needs new non skid and/or bottom paint and/or trim cleaned and redone. And finally, Typhoon "C", everything has been done. New cushions, new paint where needed, newer than original sails, etc. The reason I am asking this is that I bought what I would call a "B" boat. I am nearly finished with redoing the nonskid, all of the wood, the boot stripe and the bottom. I am replacing the cushions and the main sail cover. I have replaced the main. Anyway, as I was doing the second coat on the toerail today, I thought, "John, you're crazier than crap. This boat will never be worth what you have in it." Tonight I checked the internet and found boats from $1500 to $7500. So, what is a Typhoon worth? Remember, act as a buyer not a seller. Thank you for your time.

What's a Typhoon worth?

Re: What's a Typhoon worth?
I'm in the same boat (no pun intended) with the "B" rating. Maybe it should change to: "You B spending!" I've been adding a lot of goodies and don't know if I'll get it back or not. I was considering either a Corithian or a Ty at the time, and there happened to be a comparison going regarding the subject on this board. Someone wanted to know what they're worth. Another who responded summed it up by writing "They're worth more than money". Thus far I agree.
BTW, Did you get my check?

Re: What's a Typhoon worth?
I BOUGHT MY TYPHOON, DAYSAILER, HULL #6, 4 YEARS AGO, PROBABLY PAID TOO MUCH FOR A GREAT BOAT (PAID $7000), NEEDED BOTTOM PAINT, HAD TRAILER AND 20 YEAR OLD CHRYSLER LONG SHAFT. NOW HAVE NEW MAIN AND GENOA, ADDED ROLLER FURLER, NEW HONDA 5 HP, AND ABOUT TO PURCHASE GENNAKER. IS IT WORTH IT. YOU BET, WILL MY FAMILY RECOVER THE COST WHEN THEY SELL IT AFTER MY FUNERAL, PROBABLY NOT. IS THE PSYCHIC INCOME WORTH IT, YA SURE, YOU BETCHA. I AM NOW RACING AGAINST ENSIGNS, AND WITH CORRECTED TIME, VERY COMPETITIVE
Re: What's a Typhoon worth?
with an original purchase price of $3500 plus $1800 for a trailer and ten years worth of added goodies i am still under $8000. i could not count the number of compliments about my ty from others with new $20,000 boats that sit at their slips when the wind pipes to 25-30 knots. what surprises me is why so many new, lousy 18-22 footers are bought by people who could save half their money and have such a great boat as the ty. i guess because they are so shiny!!!!

Re: What's a Typhoon worth?
- I think there is a huge difference between selling a B or C boat and selling the A boat. I bought a 1977 "A-" basket case a few years back for $800. I put a ton of sweat and about $2000 into the boat to make it a B- boat and it is one of the best boats of any size I have ever sailed. I recently got the order from my wife to reduce my "fleet" from three boats to one. The Ty is in similiar shape to the A boat you described. It needs topside fiberglass and brightwork restoration, and has no motor or trailer, but a brand new main, and all the necessary equipment. Unfortunately, I have had little luck selling her. At the same time, I have seen B boats sell for twice what I am asking.
I think most folks buy a Ty as either a 1st boat, or as the boat they own when they sell their big boat. People in that position usually either don't have the time or don't have the ability to take on a project boat, so in the end they would rather pay more than risk getting in over their heads. I think you will have a better chance getting your money back than you think. If not, she will more than repay you with good sailing. Fair winds!

Re: What's a Typhoon worth?
John, Over the past several years I have purchased 3 "A" boats and never regretted a single minute of restoration turning them back into C plus works of art. My first boat was a1965, 29' Duch built" Trintella",restoration took 3 years. My son a high school senior at the time, learned the art of boat building,My daughter a high school Jr,learned the art of sailing, often taking her all the way to Block Island,Vinyard,s and beyond. My second boat was a 1932 14' 'Bull Dog" built by T.A. Kyle, of city island, NY,and adopted by the American Yacht Club, Rye, NY, as a one design class.Fifteen were built, sad to say i don't know of any others still afloat.I still have it,she is launched every spring in long Island Sound.New paint and a fresh coat of varnish. My daughter sails her.And lastly to my latest project, and restoration of an early Ty,that has taken the best part of 2 years, including the rebuilding of the trailer to transport her to Long island Sound. Would i do it all over again?absolutely!. Did I keep count of the costs?. Yes,at first, then I began to realize there was more to life than the bottom line......" It is not the getting there that counts, but the journey it's self." There is no amount of money that can pay for those lazy summer days working on my first boat with the troops........Just do it,enjoy the experience and dam the cost. It will pay you back ten thousand fold!............ By the way I sold the first boat for a profit of O................ Regards Bob PJohn Phillips wrote: I think it would be interesting to tap the wealth of knowledge on this board and do a bit of marketing study. What is a typhoon really worth?
