Water pooling around winches at coaming boards

Post by David hodos »

I have a '74 CD25 which is having water pool on the side deck area aft of the winches. The coaming boards have been caulked with a silicone-like substance (which doesn't look factory-like). Should these coamings have caulking on them? It seems to me that the water should drain down into the cockpit or out throught the toe-rail drain holes. Can anyone tell me if they have this same problem?

One possibillity that definitely effects the CD30's and probably other models, is that the boat is not on her lines, fore and aft. If the boat is "squatting", then the center of gravity moves back, and the water will pool at a location that does not drain as well as the area that Alberg intended.

What we did was to use 270 lbs of sand bags in the bow, under the vberth (the area has a beautifully molded in area that holds these bags perfectly, without any movement whatever). Now your boat is smaller, and so the amount of correction weight will be far less. If your waterline shows that the boat is squatting, try moving your heavier items in stowage forward a bit, and see what happens. If you run out of moveable stowage, then add sand til the boat is in trim (or sinks! heh).

Give it a try..

There is a bead of caulk along the bottom edge of the coamings, that's normal. It should appear smooth and neat with distinct sharp edges, like it was masked off. Water should not drain under the coaming into the cockpit.

As long as the area of deck where the pooling is occuring has enough camber to facilitate water run off towards the rail you can always add additional limber holes to the toe rail if the boat doesn't sit on her lines and you can't shift weight and don't want to add sand or any other weight to the bow, which I wouldn't do. In my opinion you need to keep the bow as bouyant(sp) as possible. If you make new limber holes be sure to seal them well.

David,

The bead of caulking is normal. 1978 and later CD25s have a bronze drain glassed into the fwd outboard corner of the seats that leads to an outlet just above the scuppers. I don't think your boat will have the seat drains. However, it may have a recess in the glass that runs behind the coaming right where that water is pooling up on the side deck. It runs behind the coaming and leads down to the seat corner. Most CD25s I've seen had the recess plugged up with caulking. Try poking around there with a piece of wire to see if you find one. There should also be an opening in the toe rail around there too - be sure to keep that clear.

Jon :)
